How would you react if a burglar entered your home when your children are present?

I haven't read any responses. Wondering if any poster replied: Take 'em.

Someone coming into a house looking to shoot people is called a murderer, not a burglar. Random people breaking into a house looking to an excuse to kill someone is very very rare, even general even burglars are not looking for this to happen and would rather grab some things unseen and exit with no interaction

We have a large dog who barks at every noise, and an alarm system including panic buttons in every level of the house. We also live in a safe neighborhood although I realize nothing is guaranteed (thinking about the Savopolos family).

Oh and we have Alexa’s set up around the house that can drop in on some older family members. So we could in theory contact them or when use a voice call.

I will get my gun first. Won’t hesitate to shoot.

This video of a burglar loving on a dog almost makes you like him (until you remember he's stealing..)

so you'd like go down stairs and shoot them proactively? If they were on their way out the door with 3 ipads they'd grabbed from your counter...would you still shoot them? or is it more if they started coming to where you were you'd shoot them? some people seem so eager for an excuse to shoot someone when most burglars are just taking the $1000 uppababy out of the garage to resell and aren't armed or a threat to you

Op, I think the idea that you can sacrifice yourself to save your daughter and this will somehow keep your daughter safer than getting help is a romantic notion from watching too many movies. Much better to call 911 and get help on the way than to try and be a hero and think that means your daughter is safe. A burglar is more likely to leave you and your daughter alone and not harm you if you leave them alone and don't pose a threat.

OP here. Between engaging the burglars in order to distract them /give them valuables and sacrificing myself is a long way to go. I consider it my responsibility to do something and not hide in the bushes while my daughter is about to have a traumatizing experience alone (even if she is not harmed).

Engaging the burglars in anyway is more likely to make them act rashly, such as take out their moms stupid antics on the DD they find later on.

Certainly I would shoot. They picked a wrong house. And that’s not my problem.

OP here. Of course, the safest strategy would be to avoid meeting the burglars face to face, and hiding.

I meant that I would distract them only if a face-to-face meeting cannot be avoided.

Great. So you kill some unarmed teen, and his dangerous older brother comes next week to match your escalation.

I would wait in our upstairs hallway. To get to the kids room or the master, you have to go up the stairs. If you line prone in the hallway, you would have a very easy shot before the burglar knows what is happening and with buckshot at short range, accuracy is not really an issue

You can text 911. So the smart thing to do is text 911 your address and how many people are in your family and ages, race.

Then, deal with whatever is happening until they arrive. I live close in, so the police would be here within minutes.

This is a good reminder for the "get a dog" crew. Most dogs will just roll over to get belly rubs. Or you designer dog may be valuable and it will be stolen too...

I can't get my mind around that - someone is literally on the way out the door and you'd still shoot them. Soldier in combar have major PTSD over killing someone and you'd be happy to have the flimsy excuse despite their being no threat to you any longer
