| I have to chime into this discussion as I am an Oberlin graduate. I lived in an apartment above Gibson's bakery. I can still smell the sweet smell of donuts. Dave Gibson was a racist. He would follow minorities around the bakery. I also thought this was not in line with the college or town's liberal leanings Afterall it was the first school to integrate. However, Oberlin is not totally the bad guy here. The dean of students went rogue and helped amp off an already super woke population. Plus, people like the head of communications helped with this. From what I hear Oberlin supported their staff but ultimately fired the dean and demoted the comms exec. The whole situation was unfortunate and could have been avoided if the school had talked to Dave Gibson decades ago about his racist actions. They could have been proactive and threatened to pull their business before this unfortunate situation happened. The judgement was so high because the townsfolk hate the college. |

“ He would follow minorities around the bakery..”
You mean like the students who were attempting to steal from him? |
If he were well known as a racist, why would minorities bother shopping there? Oh I forgot, the said minorities weren’t looking to shop, just steal. |
| Oberlin is ranked 39th in the US News liberal arts colleges rankings. Is it circling the drain? |
I am surprised at the poor quality of your writing and spelling considering you are an Obie. judgement [sic] |
Is 39th a bad place to be? With a billion dollar endowment, I strongly doubt that Oberlin is "circling the drain." |
They did steal from the bakery. That’s not racism when you are a store proprietor and you are watching known thieves take your inventory |
Did you go to Oberlin? See any of this firsthand? If not, then you need to STFU b/c you're just parroting what you've read online. People who know this guy are in a much better position to give their opinions on him. And if he only followed black students suspected of stealing . . . that's still racist. But you know that. |
I read that Oberlin tried to negotiate a deal with the bakery that their students could get "one free pass" to steal something from the bakery. |
It is if you are only applying the surveillance, etc. to black patrons. Please tell me you're not that dumb. And as for "why don't black students go somewhere else if he's racist" . . . 1) no one should pander to the prejudices of another. PERIOD. 2) you've clearly never been to Oberlin. I grew up not far from there. My mother grew up even closer and I had family there. It's . . . . small. Not a lot of options. 3) No one should pander to prejudices of another. |

Wow, I guess my writing proves that I am the product of a school with a paltry ranking of 39. I wasn't aware that one had to carefully craft message board replies.
Gibson's is more than a bakery. It's more of a general store. During my time at Oberlin and I am sure it had not changed it was the only option for purchasing certain basic things like cigarettes, gum. Thing of a bodega in NYC with fresh baked things and you have Gibson's. Gibson's would do racial profiling. Employees would follow black students around the store and ask them repeatedly if they needed something. They would look up and see that they were being watched. They did not do these to white students. I was present when this happened on multiple occasions to friends. Unfortunately, some of these friends were just accustomed to be this . We all thought but was surprising given how liberal the school is, but the same was not true of all the proprietors in town. It's a statement on society. Gibson's is not the only racist business in America, however, it's hard not to be called out for it when surrounded by fiercely woke college students who feel guilty for their white privilege. I don't agree with the actions of Meredith Raymondo or Ben Jones or several of the other faculty. If the students wanted to protest they should have left it to the students and left the college out of it. Obies love a good protest and try hard to find reasons to protest. |
I did go to Oberlin. I knew Dave. I lived in the apartment above Gibson's. So yes, I knew him. I am white and therefore did not experience prejudicial treatment. I did however see it woke with friends. I'm not a troll like you. I attended from 1994-1999. I attended for 5 years because I was a double degree student (college and conservatory). Do you want to know what dorm I lived in? (Barrows, Talcott) Dining hall I most frequented? (Stevenson but Dascomb because it was closer to the Con for lunch). Jesus. |
Are you a racist? Do you think all Minorities steal and therefore should be followed and harassed when they go into a store to buy a magazine or a Diet Coke? WTF is wrong with you? |

To the poster claiming to be an “Obie” (gag) - your anecdotes are irrelevant. What actually happened started because two students were SHOPLIFTING. That they were black is not the issue, though we know you would love to fixate on their race.
Shoplifting is a crime. Not sure how you can possibly defend their actions or the actions of the ultra-woke and stupid student body for protesting and trying to cancel a business that had been stolen from. I can’t even believe you felt the need to chime in with your utterly irrelevant claims. I sincerely hope Oberlin has to pay all damages. They are awful and if I’d be ashamed to admit I went there, if I were you. |
DP. You seem to be conveniently forgetting that the students in question DID steal from him. As for your other nonsense, sounds like you’re very much blaming the victim here - which was the Gibson family. |
