Gibson's is more than a bakery. It's more of a general store. During my time at Oberlin and I am sure it had not changed it was the only option for purchasing certain basic things like cigarettes, gum. Thing of a bodega in NYC with fresh baked things and you have Gibson's.

Gibson's would do racial profiling. Employees would follow black students around the store and ask them repeatedly if they needed something. They would look up and see that they were being watched. They did not do these to white students. I was present when this happened on multiple occasions to friends. Unfortunately, some of these friends were just accustomed to be this . We all thought but was surprising given how liberal the school is, but the same was not true of all the proprietors in town. It's a statement on society. Gibson's is not the only racist business in America, however, it's hard not to be called out for it when surrounded by fiercely woke college students who feel guilty for their white privilege.

I don't agree with the actions of Meredith Raymondo or Ben Jones or several of the other faculty. If the students wanted to protest they should have left it to the students and left the college out of it. Obies love a good protest and try hard to find reasons to protest.
