Oberlin Sues Insurers who Denied Coverage for Gibson Case

He would follow minorities around the bakery. I also thought this was not in line with the college or town's liberal leanings Afterall it was the first school to integrate. However, Oberlin is not totally the bad guy here. The dean of students went rogue and helped amp off an already super woke population. Plus, people like the head of communications helped with this. From what I hear Oberlin supported their staff but ultimately fired the dean and demoted the comms exec. The whole situation was unfortunate and could have been avoided if the school had talked to Dave Gibson decades ago about his racist actions. They could have been proactive and threatened to pull their business before this unfortunate situation happened. The judgement was so high because the townsfolk hate the college.

Oberlin did not fire the Dean of Students. Not only were her actions not disavowed by the school, she was not disciplined in any way and she left of her own accord in 2021 to become a Dean at Oglethorpe. It took me 5 seconds to find this on Google. All of the quotes from the school were about her being “beloved” and “respected.”

https://oberlinreview.org/25680/news/former-dos-meredith-raimondo-leaves-oberlin/

When she stepped down from her role as Dean, the school emphatically denied that it had anything to do with the Gibson’s case:

https://oberlinreview.org/22398/news/vice-president-and-dean-of-students-steps-down-to-return-to-faculty/

Throughout the litigation, the administration has denied wrongdoing, and President Ambar stated that the lawsuit did not contribute to Raimondo’s choice to step back.
“I cannot say that as strongly as I want to,” President Ambar said. “This has absolutely nothing to do with Gibson’s. This really has to do with the strategic direction of the institution. … “These are tough jobs, they take a lot out of you. … When you’re in these jobs, there are always these moments where the senior staff member and the president think, ‘Have we done all the things we can do in the context of you in this role?’ That happens with every senior staff person.”

Oberlin is squarely to blame here. Anyone defending their behavior has a screw loose.

You mean like the students who were attempting to steal from him?

Are you a racist? Do you think all
Minorities steal and therefore should be followed and harassed when they go into a store to buy a magazine or a Diet Coke? WTF is wrong with you?

DP. You seem to be conveniently forgetting that the students in question DID steal from him. As for your other nonsense, sounds like you’re very much blaming the victim here - which was the Gibson family.

Thanks for pointing out what should have been painfully obvious to the contrarians in this discussion. I assume the Gibson family built up their business over decades of concerted effort. They have the legal right to do what they can to try to keep product shrinkage to a minimum. The apologists for these criminals have obviously never owned a business. Harassing black thieves, which is what Gibson’s did, is not racist. I’m sure that this business has had many items pilfered over the years. Woke people don’t care about that. Only if it happens to a minority, then it’s automatically racist. See above.

Gibson's would do racial profiling. Employees would follow black students around the store and ask them repeatedly if they needed something. They would look up and see that they were being watched. They did not do these to white students.

Uhhhh, is it possible they were just asking if they needed something? Because they wanted to know? Why does everything have to be “racism”? If they didn’t ask, I’m sure you’d be on here saying “they ignored black people.”

Besides, the Oberlin police did a review of shoplifting calls from the store. The store called about more white shoplifters than POC.

Is 39th a bad place to be?

With a billion dollar endowment, I strongly doubt that Oberlin is "circling the drain."

39th out of the ranked liberal arts colleges? That ain’t great.

This is so stupid on Oberlin’s part. I’ve always thought of it as a decent school, though farther left than me. Why bring this up and rehash this case that makes them look bad when they have a billion dollar endowment? I can’t decide if they are actually in bad financial shape/have little unrestricted endowment or they’re this self righteous. My DD was waitlisted and it was in her top 3. I’m actually glad at this point she ended up at a lower ranked college because of how much hate the school gets.

Also to the poster mentioning Grinnell and how it’s more selective over the years - they’ve gone in a different direction because they have incredible financial aid, they have one of the top endowments per student. They also provide need based financial aid to international students, which is rare, and that drives a lot of applicants.

Even if it were free I wouldn’t want my child going to Oberlin. By drawing a hard line refusing to acknowledge they could have done things differently they will continue to lose prospective students. It’s that stubbornness that will be their downfall.
