What Schools Do You Consider “Prestigious?”

Harvard english sound like ALDC.

What you actually study as well as the school determines prestige.

Its easy to change majors at these schools.

Let me know after you change

I know at least a dozen UMC kids who got into HYSPM but instead of draining retirement of their parents or taking huge parent plus loans, went to other T20 schools on significant scholarships to make it affordable. Prestige is good if you are rich or on aid as HYSPM doesn't give merit scholarships.

What is wrong with you?

I'm waiting for a friend to weigh in to ensure their school makes the prestige cut - and I'm not talking about MI or UVA boosters (who get way too much grief here), but people who really think their life - or their children's - is going to turn out horribly wrong if they attend a public school, etc. Must be top USNWR for universities or LACs, but no publics, absolutely no publics.

And all of this when they pretty much lead a very ordinary life with no real professional accomplishment to point to at the end of the day.

We have friends like this who were "all-in" on an Ivy, any Ivy - just because (they say) Ivies open doors. Not only was unrealistic for their DC's profile (did not even have "lottery ticket" stats/schedule) but it was puzzling since both parents were state school grads who (unlike your friend) have been very successful in their careers. Admittedly, they are not in the billionaire category and wouldn't register as "somebodies" in the DC bubble world - but they are successful by any other measure and personally valued and sought after in their prospective fields.

Well - Ivy (and nothing even close to T40) didn't pan out and they had to change gears. I think their DC will do great (and always did). The DC has had great parent support and education their whole life and has full financial support from parents. The parents also have all sorts of professional contacts that will help the DC in job market later. They really underestimate how many steps ahead their DC is already.

OP - don't bother with what people thinks is prestigious. Make a realistic balanced list of places your child would want to attend. Pay extra attention to the likely schools (find things to love) because it could very well be the set from which they are choosing from next Spring. Admissions is tough these days.

FWIW I have a relative who attended Emory in undergrad (now employed as a physician). She did not realize, in her forties, that Spain was not an actor in World War 2.

You are so silly.

I’m a lawyer from an T10 law school and I didn’t know that until this post just now that I am reading at 38. Add that to your list of “people who didn’t learn a lot about WWII” I guess.

Spain may not have had WW2 forces but they were certainly a player. To say they had no involvement is VERY naive.

Middle-class people should be aware of this. If you blindly think that "Harvard" is such a prestigious name, so you will be all set spending a ton of money, that could be a big mistake.

CMU CS, NYU Stern, GT SFS etc. are more prestigious than useless majors at those school names that keep popping up.

If it's really prestigious, it will be highly valued in society, industries, and the real world.

Harvard English: $49,675
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?166027-Harvard-University&fos_code=2301&fos_credential=3

Northwestern Psychology: $61,389
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0999&fos_credential=3

Does it look prestigious? They are simply not.
Now

CMU Elect Engineering: $$149,740
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?211440-Carnegie-Mellon-University&fos_code=1107&fos_credential=3

Northeastern CS: $132,227
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?167358-Northeastern-University

Boston College Finance: $110,242
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?164924-Boston-College&fos_code=5208&fos_credential=3

These seem more serious and prestigious.
If someone throws out some school names and tries to convince you that they are prestigious, it is likely a rich white person with an ALDC kid trying to scam you. Watch Out.

This is 10-year-out from beginning of college.
What does it tell you?

If you are middle class, whatever you do, be prepared to make shit after 6 years from graduation.
