What Schools Do You Consider “Prestigious?”

These are the institutions most important to the United States.

Ask most people and Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan are more important. They may be important in your circle, but there are people who have no idea what they are. If you are talking about research, then Cal, USF, Michigan, Washington... should be on the list

GT, lol. No.

I would take GT SFS over Harvard English.
How about you?

I would take Harvard English if not an ALDC.

If you got accepted to both? Which one would you pursue?
I'll go to GT SFS. How about you?

Harvard English... Harvard is still Harvard. They don't admit by major, so even getting into Harvard English is very difficult.

FWIW I have a relative who attended Emory in undergrad (now employed as a physician). She did not realize, in her forties, that Spain was not an actor in World War 2.

Do you always quiz people on fun facts?

What is wrong with you?

I'm waiting for a friend to weigh in to ensure their school makes the prestige cut - and I'm not talking about MI or UVA boosters (who get way too much grief here), but people who really think their life - or their children's - is going to turn out horribly wrong if they attend a public school, etc. Must be top USNWR for universities or LACs, but no publics, absolutely no publics.

And all of this when they pretty much lead a very ordinary life with no real professional accomplishment to point to at the end of the day.

There is no MI booster problem here, only the UVA booster problem. Don't lump them together.

It's spelled with a "w" = Northwestern

Again school major combination is important.

I would say Northeastern CS/Engineering is more prestigious than Northwestern Communications, Psychology, Theater

+1

Have to agree there. Can't help but wonder why OP keeps starting these kinds of threads. He needs to let it go re: where he, his kids v. other kids attend/ed school.

Knowing kids who have gone to Harvard, Cornell, etc. made it less prestigious for me. There are probably amazing people who have gone to those schools. The kids I know are smart, but not geniuses. They all have family money and one also had athletic ability.

There are many ways to ge into a school but if people are willing to use back doors than its clearly a prestigious school.

It is a big scam by rich white people who try hard to promote their school brands as "prestigious" after they send their ALDC kids to these schools for easy majors. Middle-class people should be aware of this. If you blindly think that "Harvard" is such a prestigious name, so you will be all set spending a ton of money, that could be a big mistake.

CMU CS, NYU Stern, GT SFS etc. are more prestigious than useless majors at those school names that keep popping up.

If it's really prestigious, it will be highly valued in society, industries, and the real world.

Harvard English: $49,675
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?166027-Harvard-University&fos_code=2301&fos_credential=3

Northwestern Psychology: $61,389
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0999&fos_credential=3

Does it look prestigious? They are simply not.
Now

CMU Elect Engineering: $$149,740
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?211440-Carnegie-Mellon-University&fos_code=1107&fos_credential=3

Northeastern CS: $132,227
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?167358-Northeastern-University

Boston College Finance: $110,242
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?164924-Boston-College&fos_code=5208&fos_credential=3

These seem more serious and prestigious.
If someone throws out some school names and tries to convince you that they are prestigious, it is likely a rich white person with an ALDC kid trying to scam you. Watch Out.

I need to look both school and major combination.

Harvard english sound like ALDC.

What you actually study as well as the school determines prestige.

Its easy to change majors at these schools.
