It didn't suddenly appear. It has been a geographic term for more than thirty years.

Are you from around here (Bethesda)? Whether the term existed or not, it was not in colloquial use.

I literally never heard the term North Bethesda until the last few years. Growing up we always referred to anywhere after where Wisconsin turns into Rockville Pike as Rockville. Garrett Park was a neighborhood and referred to just as Garrett Park.

What is it about North Bethesda that freaks people out? It's been a designation for more than 50 years. Were you not paying attention?

We lived in Potomac near WCHS for 15 years but I always told people that we live in Rockville. A few years ago, we moved to Bethesda. Finally we can tell people where we live. Bethesda is a very diverse area. Unlike CC, nothing prestigious about it.

Why did you lie? Ironically your act of denying where you actually lived to project the image you wanted was very pretentious... Wow.

I'm guessing your friends wondered what else you lied about.

My friends know where we live. “Rockville” was only mentioned to people whom we met at work or other social events. By the way, the part of Potomac we lived is also called Rockville although the zip code is 20854.

Potomac sounds Republican. Maybe they are using shorthand to mention this about themselves.

…But they have a Bethesda address. I even checked to verify that I wasn’t mistaken and, yup, Bethesda.

I think both are lovely areas and obviously both have a reputation for being high-income or “prestigious” places to live so what is going on here?

Am I missing some cultural divide or distinction? Are some areas of Bethesda considered Potomoc?

Oh wow. Are there still people who think Potomac is posh? It’s way cooler to say Bethesda if you can’t get away with saying DC.

I feel like Potomac is a town that you either love 100% and are all in or you just don’t get…

Either that, or the person genuinely lives in an area that’s known as a Potomac although, perhaps it is technically Bethesda, Avenel comes to mind immediately.

Selective lying. In order to make a good first impression. Believe it or not, people do embrace honesty.

You did kinda live in Rockville. I don’t think anyone thinks of those little houses with carports by WCHS on 100x100 plots as Potomac. I would say Rockville too.

Now Iron Gate, Bentcross etc. is real Potomac.

Even the 1.6 million homes near Potomac Village is called “the hood”

Real Potomac is 10x Bethesda. But 95 percent of people with a Potomac address don’t live in Real Potomac hence the say Rockville.

My daughters friend lives in Real Potomac

There are approximately zero homes for $1.6 million near Potomac Village.
