Bethesda Address but “I Live in Potomoc”

I have a bethesda address outside the beltway and much closer to the village than downtown bethesda. I say that all the time just to clarify my location.

I thought Potomac was an old has been. Isn’t Bethesda preferable? Your friends must be stuck in the 80s.

You do Whitman also has Potomac students. Most of River Falls go there

OP here (not a troll, though feeling sort of dumb)—this describes their location too so must be it! Thanks.

And in all honesty, I’m not really *that* new so should have known the spelling. I was embarrassed to ask my friends, since we recently reconnected after various moves/life stuff, in case it was an offensive clarifying question for some reason I was missing.

Troll or not, it sounds like OP will fit perfectly in this area -- obsesses over stupid stuff like this.

Parts of Avenel have Bethesda addresses so I would consider those fine if you said Potomac instead.

I grew up in Chevy Chase and there were always parts of Bethesda that required more info because it’s so big. I’ve actually used the words “Potomac-y part of Bethesda” to describe where friends lived to my DH - they were out by Bradley and River.

Yes. I think OP and others are making a thing out of something that isn't a thing. Bethesda is enormous. It varies from bungalows over the Potomac in Glen Echo to Mcmansions on 2 acre lots in Avenel to closet-set ranch houses in Cabin John or big houses on tiny lots in Edgemoor. If you say that you live in Bethesda, you usually do need to clarify if you're trying to give any kind of idea of where you live.

I always say I live in Rockville even though I have a Kensington address. IMO, Rockville is less “prestigious” than Kensington so it’s not like I get some benefit from that.

It’s just a more accurate description of where I live. I live much more toward the Rockville/North Bethesda area than Kensington proper, so that’s what I say.

+1
And with new friends, Potomac is a better indicator of UGHHH I have to go outside the beltway! so it would be an appreciated distinction from me if I were planning visits

How could Bethesda be enormous when Arlington, where I live, is 4 times the population of Bethesda and is only 26 square miles. Is Bethesda very spread out so that much more suburban than arlington?

Arlington is definitely more dense than Bethesda. A good chunk of Arlington is the cemetery, Ft. Myer, the Pentagon complex, and the airport so the actual residential area isn’t as big as the county.

My friend lives in Potomac and her house is half the value of a tiny row house in 20007. Why do people think everybody in Potomac lives in a McMansion?

Because most of them have just driven down river rd and seen those massive tacky mansions.

It's weird you looked up your friend's address to confirm they live where they said; why did you do that?

Potomoac is hot again. It was hot in the 1980s and 1990s then seemed to go through a period where it wasn't as desirable due to distance from DC, but now it's super desirable given that people are realizing that DC is a s***hole. Great schools, no riff raff, little to no crime, great amenities, and nice housing stock (with the exception of some gawdy mansions).
