Bethesda Address but “I Live in Potomoc”

We were out with friends the other day who kept mentioning, in various ways, how much they enjoy living “in Potomoc” after their recent move out there.

…But they have a Bethesda address. I even checked to verify that I wasn’t mistaken and, yup, Bethesda.

I think both are lovely areas and obviously both have a reputation for being high-income or “prestigious” places to live so what is going on here?

Am I missing some cultural divide or distinction? Are some areas of Bethesda considered Potomoc?

There are Bethesda Addresses off Old Seven Lockes that may as well be Potomac. But Potomac is a different kind of money than Bethesda... shrug. Personally I think Chevy Chase is more prestigious than either.

OP here—sorry I’m an idiot and called it Potomoc and not Potomac. We recently moved to the area.

At any rate, I say I live in Falls Church, and my mailing address is Falls Church, but technically we live in FFX (we are just on the border, houses down the street are FCC, houses on my side of the block are FFX). I say I live in Falls Church because that is the best way to describe where I live, I'm a block from WFC metro and right by Meridian HS.

If they live anywhere close to the Bethesda/ Potomac border, it’s extremely odd that they are making a big deal of their new Potomac lifestyle. There’s no significant difference between the two close in. If they had an estate with horses in farther out Potomac, that would be a very different lifestyle than the typical Bethesda one.

I think it is OP who sounds shallow, not her friends! There are parts of Bethesda that are basically Potomac and don’t really feel like most other parts of Bethesda. I think that’s what your friends are speaking to, not any prestige. You’re way overthinking this and trying to find a petty reason to think they’re being petty.

There’s a good chunk of Potomac that sends to Whitman.

I generally consider it to be Potomac once you get outside the beltway on river, but the actual line for zip code purposes is a somewhere just past congressional and Norwood.
