But should also be aware that crew training includes LOT of running. So, if she doesn't want to do cross-country for that reason, she probably wouldn't want to do crew. Still, if she wants to do a HS sport, she's going to have do some running. |
Yes - if you are at a W school or W school equivalent in VA, those field hockey teams are very competitive. Again, the OP said their child will go to a non-competitive high school with plenty of no-cut options. Guess what? Field Hockey most likely will either be a no-cut team or pretty easy to make at one of those non-competitive types of schools. Likewise, if her child is going to a non-competitive high school for sports, they most likely won't have a crew team either. |

Depends on her general athleticism and (possibly) size/height. Also depends on the school- which teams are no-cut?, which teams are less popular- not many try out? which teams have a separate freshman team and are generous about keeping kids around? Etc. It will really depend on the school.
For example, at our school the boys baseball team is difficult to make but the girls softball team is quite easy. Girls volleyball is difficult to make but boys volleyball is easy. I mentioned height because if your DD is very tall she’d be a lot more likely to make the volleyball or basketball teams- for freshman year anyway. No cut (or almost no cut) sports at our school are swimming, cross country, track, football, wrestling. However, making the teams doesn’t guarantee playing time in any way. |
| You need to totally stay out of it. Let her decide, sign up, tryout if required, do it all herself. Don't try to influence her. Trust me on this. |
She said she’s at a non-competitive high school. Field hockey is the perfect sport for a beginner to pickup in high school. Many schools take Freshman girls who’ve never played before. I know because my daughter was one of them. I would recommend she work on her conditioning and do Beyond Sticks to learn the basics. |

| My non-sporty kid got into golf and tennis (and yes, I know how that sounds, and no, we're not members of a country club or anything). Field hockey sounds like a good bet also. Maybe softball as another option? I was terrible at team sports and still managed to not be too awful at softball. |
| Let ‘em try whatever they are interesting in |
OMG, can’t believe what an ignorant and irresponsible comment that is about basketball. Basketball is one of the most complex and highly skilled games, and it takes years to develop the skills to play even at a non-competitive high school level. If you can’t play, you could get seriously hurt. It’s not something you pick up over a summer. |
Playing FH well is very difficult. Need speed yet excellent ball control. And there are lots of penalties if you aren’t careful with how you play. Ball control can be learned with LOTS of practice and training. Before passing judgement, maybe look at a YouTube video and see how the game is played. |

You said a lot of her friends are playing sports. She should try any no cut sport at her school that her friends are doing. Have her pick.
That’s how I started crew in HS. My friends were trying out for the team so I did too. It was no cut at my school. |
| my previous non sporty dd tried field hockey and lacrosse in 9th grade and loved them both. non competitive no cut public. she is now in 10th and still loves both. |
