What sport for a 14yo who has never literally never played sports?

And Pickleball. Super fun. Played at lots of schools and colleges. Contrary to the people who post only an old person sport, it takes skill but not as hard as tennis to learn. Look up 16 yr old Anna Leigh Waters.

This is a very bad recommendation. Basketball is incredibly difficult and frustrating to play until you get the skills. My HS player started in 2nd grade as did most teammates. And the rules are not straightforward (notwithstanding what 99.99% of people shouting incorrect nonsense at refs believe).

Try tennis it’s very easy

Your weekends are shot with regattas that leave you no time for anything else.

And parents are expected to commit too. Training on land starts in the Fall.
No thanks!

Because it doesn’t require any learned athletic skill you just grind

I tried to learn to row as an adult and found it pretty challenging to get the hang of.

Fencing. Lots of kids start as young teens.

Agree with the cross country votes. It is very welcoming and the kids seem to be nice no matter the school!

Ultimate frisbee is a no-cut club sport at many high schools.

This isn’t going to make her seem cool though is it?

Then in college I took up rowing, same story. Sports are really just a fun and healthy activity to do with friends. Simple as that!

Oh how I wish it was that simple. Parents and organized sports and general competitiveness of everything have taken the fun out.

Happily, that isn’t true everywhere. Our HS had many No cut sports, welcomes beginners, and the kids have fun. Sometimes they even win.

None of those are high school sports.

Crew is really the best option for someone like this.

Fencing is.

I know kids who took up volleyball as a first year and liked it.

My kid fenced for years and kids and adults thought it was very cool.

Volleyball! While there are some club players out there, there are also a good number of beginners.
