Let them experience the consequences of their voting choices. |
True. Maybe a recent immigrant? |
On its face, I would agree with this. But overwhelmingly, the people who suffer from the increased crime are lower-income people of color. The UMC white "allies" generally do not. |
OMG this is not true. Quote any MoCo politician ever saying we should not give maximum sentences to rapists. You can’t because it’s jot true that MoCo wants to be soft on crime. You guys keep lying over and over. |

When this thread first appeared, those of who said pretty much the same thing-fight back, do not let yourself get taken off that path--had our posts removed. Evidently, you can't even tell women to fight back now. I have no doubt in my mind that that man would never have gotten me off that trail if it were me. Of course, not blaming the victim, at all, but my husband and I have taught our teenage daughter how to defend herself and I know she would. With what the city is coming to, we have no choice. |
The guy had a MACHETE, good luck with that. And, yes, you are victim-blaming. |
My teen DD was stopped and harassed, including physical touching, by a mid-20s male on the walking path in Beach Drive right by the playground at the intersection of Beach and Garrett Park Rd. The local police and the park police both responded, and told us that girls and young women shouldn't trust any part of the walking path to be safe at any time of day. They recommended always going in at least pairs and never wearing headphones. They also recommended getting a large dog to walk with. |
Bring a gun to your next knife fight. We will not get protection from politicians or the police. It’s DIY. |
Conversely, progressive justice reform touted by liberals, and overwhelmingly the DC city council, does result in policies like the Youth Rehabiliation Act which shields criminals records, the second look act, the fact that speeders with thousands of dollars of speeding tickets can keep their license without issue, that violent teens get a slap on the wrist for theft and robbery, I mean all these lenient policies stem from this liberal idea against incarceration to a more restorative, holistic form of criminal justice. It’s weak on crime. Also, the liberal DA here has, by Wapo fact checking, declined to prosecute 67% of crimes. So I’m sorry but you are wrong. Republicans are tougher on crime. I’m sorry you don’t like reality. |
Sorry she went through that. It stinks because it sounds like these women WERE actually walking ‘in pairs’. Are we not allowed to even walk with other women anymore. What? Now we need male escorts to ensure our safety while walking on a trail? I come from a country where many men think it’s acceptable to harass or touch women they don’t know. I have told my daughter to never walk with headphones and now told her to at least carry mace. If you see something suspect, keep the mace in your pocket, with your finger on the trigger. At the very least, it could buy you some time or let you scream for help. This sucks. |
Yes you are. |
Do you believe in taking any safety precautions at all? |
Council Members Jawando and Mink have introduced the STEP act: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/Resources/Files/agenda/col/2023/20230228/20230228_2B.pdf This would prevent police from doing traffic stops for infrations like expired registration and defective lights. It's done for racial equity: "The purpose of this bill is to promote fairness by reducing racial disparities that occur during a traffic stop" Yet, many traffic stops result in the seizure of weapons and drugs. For example this one that got fentanyl and crystal meth out of a dealer's hands before it could reach the victims: https://www2.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgportalapps/Press_Detail_Pol.aspx?Item_ID=43029 I agree it's unlikely a MoCo politician is on record for reducing the penalty for rape (which anyway is set by the state, not county, so they have no control) but they are most certainly in favor of less enforcement of crimes generally. |
Person responsible for the attack: the attacker Person not responsible for the attack: the victim, no matter what safety precautions the victim may or may not have taken |
