I stopped walking (I’m not a runner) alone on trails, even near Beach Drive in Rock Creek unless it’s a weekend and they’re pretty populated.
My teen DD was stopped and harassed, including physical touching, by a mid-20s male on the walking path in Beach Drive right by the playground at the intersection of Beach and Garrett Park Rd. The local police and the park police both responded, and told us that girls and young women shouldn't trust any part of the walking path to be safe at any time of day. They recommended it always going in at least pairs and never wearing headphones. They also recommended getting a large dog to walk with.
Sorry she went through that. It stinks because it sounds like these women WERE actually walking ‘in pairs’. Are we not allowed to even walk with other women anymore. What? Now we need male escorts to ensure our safety while walking on a trail? I come from a country where many men think it’s acceptable to harass or touch women they don’t know. I have told my daughter to never walk with headphones and now told her to at least carry mace. If you see something suspect, keep the mace in your pocket, with your finger on the trigger. At the very least, it could buy you some time or let you scream for help. This sucks.
