A general note to clubs about tryouts

And parents, talk to your own kids about sharing intel with friends. If they get an offer at a first tryout, suggest they keep that to themselves for a bit if friends are still going through the process.

Nooooo. Coaches should deal with the players directly. They should extend offers to the children they want to play for them. But they should also speak to those who are being rejected, ideally to be kind and encouraging, tell them what to work on before trying again.

At age 9?

For your less talented child, just avoid tryouts by finding a small club where there’s only one team and they play on a league and division where the kid is not the best kid but gets plenty of playing time.

Parents just really need to manage their kids expectations better and have a realistic view of their kids abilities.

How does this work, exactly, for a regular kid? You are supposed to email the coach well before tryouts and just ask to practice with the team, for free? That seems weird to me. If your child is a super super star, I guess it works? But 99.99 percent of kids are just regular players.

NP. My kid did this for every club he played for and also when choosing a high school. For clubs, it worked like this: he was working with a trainer and asked about joining a house league team. She said to do travel instead and told him when her org had tryouts. The tryout was a formality - we learned later that she added him to a B team roster before the tryout.

For high school, DS met the varsity coach on shadow day and asked about the team. Coach invited him to an open gym, and kid was practicing 3 times a week from then on. It was actually a little weird b/c DS did well playing 5 on 5 with the varsity kids in open gyms as an 8th grader, so he started high school with very (too) high expectations.

+1 We also plan to do this for high school.

is anyone just having their kid try out with a big club to see how it feels? or been through that process before, i.e., getting info before making a move?

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to have a kid go through the process once when there’s nothing at stake, so they’re more comfortable with it when they need to.

DC goes to basketball tryouts for teams they have no intention of joining and treats them like open gyms. They love playing and practicing and tryouts are either free or much cheaper than training sessions

Yup. My kids do too (soccer). They appreciate scoping out the competition and playing against different kids and experiencing different coaches.

I think viewing it that way even when they do care about making the teams makes it less stressful and they’re likely to perform better at actual tryouts.

To those of you with kids who to tryouts with no intention of joining- do you let your coach know that you’re attending other tryouts?

If the asked, I'd be honest, but I don't say anything unless asked

We were told that the first team received their offers before tryouts began and the tryouts were actually just for the lower teams and that was standard for "Pallor".

At what point should we assume our child has not made the second team? We wouldn't pay $4k for the third or possible fourth team. Or if the offer for the second team hasn't come yet, is it safe to assume our child was a last pick and won't play much?

And another question, do they wait to make offers until after the third tryout? Why is the third tryout so much later in time than the first two?

This little subthread is making me LOL. I can only speak to what's going on in one of the age groups. There have been multiple rounds of offers. Some kids got offers early to stay on their same teams, at least for the first and second teams. But not all kids on those teams got offers at the same time because some were apparently on the bubble to move up or down. Then another round of offers went out to kids on the bubble confirming their placements, as well as kids placed on the third team.

I don't know how many new kids have gotten offers. But I would not expect a second team offer to be coming if you haven't yet heard anything.

This is fascinating to me. So a parent whose kid, let's call him Bencher, is on the white team last year...the other parents are saying, my Larlo got an offer to be on the white team again! But Bencher's parents could still have not heard anything? So Bencher's parents know he is on the bubble and maybe won't get an offer to stay on his same team?

Since you seem to know what the heck is going on, what's the point of the third, much-later tryout? I thought it was for, trying to fill in the last few spots on the bottom team. Have they made third team offers and gotten answers back already? Or is just a coincidence that the third tryout is so much later, and not really purposeful?

It could also mean that little bencher may have a chance at the team above the white team, but that team has people sitting on offers and larlo was clearly white team not team above white team

Not PP, but our club does it as a last ditch attempt to fill out teams. It's heavily marketed towards rec players

Is it true that the first team kids all got offers to stay on their teams before the tryouts started and that the tryouts actually aren't for any open spots on the first team?
I---naively--thought it was a real competition for all the teams (oldest kid what can i say).

And our experience they handle the team above first before they get offers to the team below.
