It's only "advantageous" in a sense that if the student is higher achieving, they have an advantage to get into an elite college over the higher achieving student in a wealthy school.

I understand what you are saying, OP. I was an immigrant kid, whose parents didn't speak English, went to a fairly rough HS where they had all of 3 AP classes. I had zero guidance.

But, today, there are so many scholarships for under privileged students, and top colleges want diversity, including geographic diversity, that if a student goes to school in an area where they don't produce a lot of high performing kids, it's much easier to stand out and get accepted to top colleges.

That is the "advantage". Of course, growing up lower income, there are many disadvantages, and I would never go back to being lower income. But, it is true that for higher performing kids from certain areas will have an easier time getting into top colleges.
