| Agree with OP. When parents of kids at schools with +$50k tuition complain that their poor child are “disadvantaged” in any way just makes me laugh. It’s so patently ridiculous. |

To add fuel to your fire, there are a number of recent posts on here by OPs who went to ivies who don't have any logical reasoning skills. They also write poorly. My recent fave is the lady (i.e. concerned parent) who started a thread about top publics asking if students *checks notes* "really learn there?"
It really takes a village idiot to suggest that no leaning happens at public universities. SMDH. That's all you can do, OP. |

I have the same story except I graduated in the mid 00s and there wasn’t any Ivy anywhere near my state (Iowa) so I knew literally no one who so much as applied to an Ivy. The school didn’t offer APs then and doesn’t now. There were only 2 years of Spanish offered, no advanced math, etc etc. When I asked my college counselor about applying to something higher ranked than U of Iowa they told me it was a lost cause despite my high stats.
People around here are just so ignorant about the world outside their bubble. |
| I went to an inner-city high school and got into a good college, although I shouldn't have -- I was wholly unprepared. I probably had a 3.5 gpa and got a 1050 on the SAT (this was 35 years ago), but I was considered in the top 10% of my high school class. My kids attend(ed) a high SES high school, and they were/have been rejected from all (even remotely) elite universities. One is currently at a T100 state school and the other is headed to another T100 state school. High gpa and SAT for both. |
A curse, in the sense that they don't stand out in their school. HOWEVER, they are very prepared for college (unlike I was), so I don't really care where they go. |
For goodness sake, have you never encountered hyperbole as a rhetorical tool? Do you think I actually believe someone can attend a major state university and learn, literally, “nothing?” The gist of the post was to find out if the educational experience at these large schools was at all comparable to the more intimate educational experience typically associated with smaller private schools. As for my writing, this is an anonymous chat board. I am pecking at my phone. One can be forgiven for constructing sentences in a casual manner, as one might while texting. |
Yeah except all the Harvard applicants have 4.0s because it's assumed only A students go to Harvard. I was a grad TA at another Ivy and our grading distributions for undergrads were ridiculous. Like half As, half Bs, if you were awake enough to realize you were lower than a B you would drop the class before finals and it would never show up on your transcript. |
| I find these arguments tedious as well. People are thinking of plucking their exact kid and plopping them in BFE and them landing better colleges. What that overlooks is all the ways said student was shaped by all the extras this area offers. |
I agree with all this but I also think they’re missing that, at a random school with no pipeline to elite colleges, the teachers aren’t necessarily grading the way you think. It can be quite arbitrary. |

Yep. These people just want to be whiny victims. If it's so great to go to a crappy HS, why don't they enroll their kids in one? It's like people who whine about how great it is to be poor because you are just showered with free stuff. Really? Then quit your job! But they don't. |
Their idea of disadvantage is "my money no longer guarantees my preferred outcome." It's ridiculous but they have no concept of what actually disadvantaged kids are up against, and outside of grand statements about how the world should be, the truly don't care. |
