No, I think they are saying the opposite. |
They've never cared as much about academics as they do sports. But feel free to make it about race if that feeds your need to be a martyr. |
Gee, I wonder why that is. ![]() |
I was on a team many years ago that won state in an academic contest. Nobody cared then either .Our culture values high school sports more than academics. |
Shameful. |
So what was the result? |
![]() I was in high school many decades ago and this was true then. Was on an academic school team and won some high honors. The school board gave us what they called "academic letters" to put on our letterman jackets. Unfortunately, none of us nerds (I use the term affectionately) owned a jacket. Seemed funny that the school board seemed to view our accomplishment through the lense of athletic achievement. |
Five pages on this topic and not one person has pointed out the extracurriculars do not matter for TJ admissions. Please look at the new rules and educate yourself. Your kid could win the Nobel prize for physics and it will not increase their chance for admittance. Top 1.5% at your kids school are automatic. Then a small added boost if you are an economically underpriveiedged kid. Your kid also needs a 3.5 GPA and needs to pass an easy admissions test and write an essay. Then they are basically pulling names out of a hat. Prepping and extracurriculars mean nothing now. |
Except if you win SO or Mathcounts you're totally in. |

Except if you win SO or Mathcounts you're totally in.[/quote] SO has nothing to do with Tj admissions, but students in SO are also those who are good enough to be offered to Tj, it is totally coincidental. |
Perhaps in the sophomore round which has a different admissions committee. It doesn't guarantee anything for the regular admissions. It is not correct to say that extracurriculars mean nothing, but you have to be able to explain them in an essay. Someone whose extracurricular is tutoring would likely be at an advantage over a MathCounts winner. |
Your information regarding the # of MS students from both Carson an Longfellow is incorrect. Source: https://www.fcps.edu/news/thomas-jefferson-high-school-continues-increase-access-all |
Some people will tell you it isn't because they don't want you to know the truth, but SO is almost guarantee. My kid wasn't even top of the team and got in. |
I heard that Mr. H. who heads up the Mathcounts is leaving at the end of this year. He is one of the best math teachers in the county. So glad my DC had a chance to be in one of his classes. |
So why did they resurrect this old thread? |
