How much do you spend per kid per year on clothing?

There must be a DCUM board 2.0 elsewhere where all their friends and family are buying clothing for their kids. Because clearly the hand-me-down givers are buying clothing.

I have never done used or hand-me-down but I buy a lot on clearance and ahead of time but much easier to do with a boy.

A few hundred a year - I have two girls, the second one rarely gets new clothes.

I’d would venture about 2K including school uniforms. No hand me downs. Buy new only and will look on eBay/Poshmark for nicer brands to find them cheaper. When I left the DC area and moved South the little girls are DRESSED especially for church. A lot of Matilda Jane, Persnickety, Well Dressed Wolf with Livie and Luca shoes, coordinating bows, etc..it was an eye opener for sure especially the price people are willing to pay.

Lol people on here are ridiculous. So much virtue signaling.

I don’t count this type of thing. If I had to try hard to make an accurate estimate, I guess I’d say maybe $200 a month. We don’t do secondhand and don’t seek out clearance. We don’t buy insanely pricey brands either.

Tween and teen girl - just checked and in the last 12 months spent around $1700 total.

13 yo boy who only wears shorts and t shirts that I buy from the Gap or Old Navy on sale. He can easily get a few years out of them until he needs to size up. He gets a few pairs of athletic shoes per year, maybe a new hoodie, and once a year a nice pair of pants and white button down shirt for band concerts. So probably about $250 per year. The shoes are the most expensive and he typically wears them out before he outgrows them.

You have no idea how much clothing waste there is.

Buying secondhand is not “virtue signaling.”

Firsthand shopping + driving to the store + using non-reusable bags is horrific.

If this counts as "horrific" in your world I'm not sure how you function with reality.

I really have no ice because I don’t budget, but not too much since my kids wear a uniform to school.

I would not buy clothes on eBay or used at all for older kids.

Buying used is much cheaper and better for the environment. Cannot emphasize the last part enough.

I will say second hand and sales get more difficult as the kids get older and get pickier about what they wear and how it fits. I wish Value Village would re-open their dressing rooms. Ebay is a pain to return (if allowed), too.

I probably spend $1k per year on the boys (mostly for the older one since they younger one gets lots of hand me downs except for shoe) and another $1-1.5k on the girl. I know it’s dumb but we easily afford it and it makes me happy. I have a few friends who have the same taste and kids slightly younger than mine so pretty much everything gets continued use after my kids outgrow it.

You're only an outlier in that you know what you're spending. A lot of these other posts are totally unrealistic. I posted on the first page (9:39) and I work my butt off to keep the numbers that low. People saying prob $600 a year and listing places like Primary just have no idea what they're spending. Even if you're careful about shopping you'd prob still be in the 4 figures per year per kid if you're buying all new.

I believe that was me actually. I budget 150 per quarter on clothes and 75 per quarter on shoes although it may have to go up to 100 this year. That budget is also based on staying one size through a season. If he randomly grows that's off the table
I track every expense. I only buy on sale and only a few primary items specifically their UPF shorts and tanks. I also tend to wait for 20 off 100 at target or when they do the sales. I can get 6-8 pairs of shorts or very thin pants (6-8 each) , 8 shirts (4-6each) and 2 sweater/zip ups for 100 or so. That's the spring cost usually and then summer I will get bathing suits, sleeveless tanks, etc. My son does not wear pajamas except when it's less than 30 degrees at night so we don't buy more than 2 for summer and 2 winter each. When Hanna Andersson has a sale they can go as low as 19 or 25.
For fall I buy 6-8 joggers, a few shirts, a few long sleeve shirts, and sweaters plus rain coat/thin windbreaker/vest. Witber is boots and bigger jacket. But I also buy one size too big so it normally lasts 2 winters.
Grandparents and family are usually good for 3-4 outfits per year.
