Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| I don't have any kids in wrestling or Wheaton and this is a terrible decision. The kids should not be punished. They can do individual matches and just have the team lose as a team each time. But they should still be allowed to practice and play |
| This may or may not be relevant or even accurate but I’m always thought that homeschooled kids were able to participate in county sports. I could be wrong. But would that also extend to somebody who goes to a private school where their school doesn’t have that sport? |
Yes, a PP made a similar point. To a kid that knows about the 'Tebow' rule, this does seem a little murky. Which makes it even more egregiously wrong that they are punishing the kids in addition to the coach |
Same. |

We know this coach through the wrestling community. He's a nice guy and made a terrible mistake. He knew what he was doing and did it anyway. He deserves his punishment. The kids do not.
The kids are not in charge of policing the team. I think it's fair to expect that a group of teens are going to trust that the adult in charge is applying the rules appropriately. It's not their job to double check that or check IDs or what have you. I appreciate that the rules are clear and mandate this move as the punishment. But that doesn't mean the rules are right. |
The MPSSAA eligibility rule is: "A. Students shall be officially registered and attending the member MPSSAA school they are authorized to attend under regulations of the local school system. They may represent only the school in which they are registered and at which it is anticipated they will complete their graduation requirements." No homeschoolers (or private schoolers) allowed. |
| Kid should have self-identified as a home-to-public transcurricular student. |
| Can't really give the students a full pass or the parents. I know for a fact when I was in school seniors would have said something if a coach was about to ruin there season. That coach knew it wasn't just going to be on him that's bs. We see kids with bad grades cost teams playoff spots. In that case yiu might not know as a teammate what Timmy is doing. However a kid that doesn't go to your school you know. I also don't get the moronic comment "so we're teaching kids to snitch?" That person obviously doesn't know what switching is. |
The entire team doesn’t forfeit because one kid is failing. The others still get to play. Minors are not supposed to learn, know, memorize, or follow MCPS rules for sports. Give me a break. It is not their job. It is administration and the coaches. |
I thought wrong all of these years. I really thought home schooled kids could! |
Ah...connecting the dots...so the kids DID expose the coach, and the coach's buddy the principal retaliated against the students! Now it all makes sense! |
Not at all |
Wrong dots, wrong connections |
OMG, read. It was the county that determined the punishment. The principal appealed the sanction and lost. |
| Kids got what they deserved. I am sorry if your kid was one of them. Live and learn (and move on). |
