Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Because they knew it and didn't do anything about it. Like accessory to a crime. I think it was the right call by school officials. |
Come on, they were kids. You expect kids to stand up to their coach, or worse, drop the dime on their coach. That's totally unrealistic. |
Seems like a valuable life lesson. |
Come on indeed. You actually wrote that? Consider it as a free life lesson. Better to learn that now than later. |
+1 athletes are taught to follow the coach's lead, not vice versa. it was not incumbent upon the athletes to notify authorities about this matter. i agree this punishment is beyond what is reasonable. |
It’s entirely possible that they didn’t know it was against the rules. |
The athletics code of conduct, which is read at each event, requires integrity and sportsmanship. I think it’s a stiff price but not out of bounds. This was terrible conduct. |
these kids are not 7. "sorry i didn't know" doesn't work here. |
how would HS athletes know what the MPSSAA rules are? if said rando (private school) student started attending an mcps class, and the mcps teacher let the rando student attend, violating mcps rules, should the entire class of students be suspended for not reporting the rando student, alongside the teacher? doesn't make sense. |
The code of conduct is read at every event? I'll confess that I only have few MS kids, and my attendance has been limited to football and basketball games at the HS, but I don't recall them ever hushing the crowd and reading the code of conduct over the PA system. |
+1 These does feel close enough to the 'Tebow' rule/situation that kids could have been confused. But the real story is that the coach victimized the kids by even putting them in the position to feel anxiety over it, and then they were victimized again when their season was cancelled. A little mercy/grace for these student athletes is in order |
Absolutely no athlete is going to go against the coaches eligibility ruling. They should not be held accountable for a coach's actions. I didn't know is does work here. It's not their job to know. It's their job to keep grades up, show up to practice and listen to their coaches. - not a Wheaton parent |
This creates far too much drama and distracts from academics. Another reason why sports belong outside of school. |
Every single event I’ve ever been to and I go to a lot of events - probably 25 a year. |
At what point is it read? I’ve never noticed it |
