It starts in 7th grade there and a lot of it is mom-directed. The over the top b’nai mitzvah celebrations help foster a culture of exclusion since some students are not only not invited, but then are the few who don’t have the custom hoodie favor to wear to school.

I have noticed this issue and tried to keep it low profile with our kids. Mostly failed in that effort. Some self reflection is needed by all of us.

It's very hard for 7th graders to understand how some other kids may be feeling due to being excluded.

It is grotesque to send kids to school with clothing that marks who is in and who is out as a way of honoring a religious event. Kids do plenty of dividing as it is. The parents don’t need to facilitate it.

Agree. All of us as community need to think about it and not make the situation worse.

I think Tilden bought into the curriculum changes suggested by Central Office, whereas parents at other local middle schools fought to keep the accelerated coursework. I hope they can bring back more of the accelerated work. Bored kids are not a good thing.

How come parents at Tilden dropped the ball here? It should be a priority to fix otherwise once slide starts, it's goes usually one way.

I think parents at Tilden are more laid back than at … Pyle for example. Unfortunately, I think they need to step it up a bit and get things going again at Tilden.

As a current Tilden parent, I would love to hear from Tilden teachers what is going on. I know the principal is very unpopular with the kids, how do staff feel?
My kids have their groups (thank you Tilden Drama!!!) and don’t seem particularly effected by what sounds like a terrible dynamic at the school.
***To clarify, they have been horrified at the reports of anti-semitic drawings and the way that some kids speak to one another. This hasn’t had a negative impact on their experience though, that I’m aware of.

There needs to be more than drama. That isn’t enough to serve all the kids. But yes yay for drama

They won state championship and went to nationals. Not sure how they did there. Need more clubs for more kids!

Chorus brings home a bunch of trophies from festivals too. The kids need to get involved in the programs they have at Tilden. Some kids ended up with a lot of freedom during Covid as parents had no other choice, but they need to engage with school again rather than just hanging out with friends after school. Some of this is on the parents.

Plus one for Book Wars too.

But even if science Olympiad is amazing and drama is amazing that isn’t for everyone.
WJ has a much broader range which is part of how things improve in high school

MD report card. Some poster will say that Tilden has higher FARMS and its all about that, so included Julius West here.


HOW DID MY SCHOOL DO OVERALL? Earned points.

Pyle - 75%
Cabin Jon - 73%
North Betheda - 69%
Julius West - 67% [ Much higher FARMs rate than Tilden ]

Tilden - 63%

There are some genuine problems and dismissing concerns as vocal minority will simply miss the point. Look at all pointers. If everything points to some problem then saying that no problem exist will never help to solve the problem. I am aware of all this report card not being 100% correct due to many factors, but just presenting it as another data point. FARMs rate in JW is 50% higher than Tilden and yet they have better score card.

Bold point is very important. You can not have one two good things because that's not going to help entire student body. Broader range is needed to catch all students to help with environment.

Best Buddies was also recognized as top in the state a few years back too, if my memory is correct. Wonderful group of kids.
