Tell 9 yo we're euthanizing dog, or just say the dog died?

With more exposure to the idea, DD was able to see why it was necessary. We all spent a long weekend doting on the dog, and DD might have checked out of that if she didn't know. We all cried a lot and looked at pictures and spoiled the dog with treats.

I did not initially plan to have DD stay for the procedure, but she wanted to and that was the right choice too. The Lap of Love vet was really great.

OP, thanks for updating us. I am a pp who was glad our 10 year old was able to come to the vet. I’m so sorry for your loss and glad your dog went painlessly and surrounded by love.

I wouldn't lie about this. It will eventually come out and could be a traumatic thing for her.

OP, thanks for the update. I’m glad to hear it went as smoothly as possible and that you told her.

Thank you for the update, OP, I've been wondering about your family. I'm glad it went smoothly with your DD and I'm sorry for the loss of your dog.

I'm glad it worked out, OP. My 8 year old came to the vet with us last week to do the same to our elderly cat, and he was better with it than DH. They hate seeing suffering, same as us.

Do not lie. Don't lose trust with your children like that.

If you lie to your kid, make sure absolutely nobody knows.

My friend said her 14 year old very sick German Shepherd ran away to everyone. About six months later I used a painter she recommended and somehow we got on the subject of her dog and he said he was there the day she put him down.

Another friend said she gave her dog up to a family on a farm. We all know what that means. LOL.
