Dry January 2023 Thread

I’ve downloaded the reframe app, and joined the dry January and 31 day challenges. I have no problem taking time away from drinking, but also slip into a daily habit quite easily as well. I’m really hoping to lose a few pounds too.

This sounds like me. Once I’m in a routine I can avoid but then I also can drink everyday. I don’t weigh myself but a few years ago I stopped for just two weeks and my pants were looser. I think alcohol makes me puffy all over.

How much is the app costing?

I quit drinking 17 months ago and feel fantastic. Cheering you all on! And to the PP who is concerned about replacement NA drinks, I think the concern is misplaced. It’s very difficult to quit a habit (especially an addictive one). Snacking on candy got me through the early days of sobriety. Do what you have to do!

Usually I just drink water now, but my favorite replacements are kombucha, apple cider vinegar drinks from TJs, and this “whiskey” recipe (the perfect winter drink): https://benandbirdy.blogspot.com/2022/03/really-really-good-non-alcoholic-booze.html?m=1

$13.99 a month, or $79.99 for the year

Right now I’m on the 7 day free trial. So far I like it. I’m going to keep it for at least a month. The app isn’t just for staying alcohol free, but more focused on reduced consumption and healthy alternatives.

I’m feeling better today. I went for a walk and am mentally preparing for going back to work.

I had to quit when I was put on certain medication. A couple of years on I had a tiny sip of my husband's red wine and now it tastes likes nasty cough medicine. I mainly drink water and decaf tea. Because I can't have a drink, I don't have that "I really need a drink" feeling.

Love the idea of training for a 10K! I already decided to do Dry January but having a goal will make it much more meaningful.

Trader Joe’s sparkling lemonade is a delicious replacement!

I signed up for the Annie Grace Alcohol Experiment just to see what the fuss is about. I do Dry January every year along with a yoga challenge just to reset and get off on the right foot. I hear good things about it. So far I just did the intro and she's got a good attitude!

Anyone else having trouble sleeping? Usually I fall asleep with in a minute of lying down. Last night took nearly 45 minutes of tossing and turning. Then I kept waking up. I've felt so good the past few days, I just need to get over this slump. Maybe I'll take an Aleve PM tonight.

What does everyone think of the NA drinks? My IG feeds are inundated with ads for these and some do look pretty good--like the mocktail mixes. Maybe not the NA wines so much. Anyone tried these and have good recs?

Yes, my sleep has been terrible. I used also fall right asleep thanks to the alcohol. Now I can barely fall asleep and when I do I am waking nearly every hour.
I have been using melatonin with out much success.
I am exhausted during the day. No one to blame but myself but still frustrating.

Alcohol actually messes with your sleep, but I don't think it's uncommon to have a little trouble when you stop drinking alcohol. My sleep has never been better.

I'm on Day 7 thanks to a post-Christmas cold, and I am sleeping better (despite coughing).

I bought a selection of NA whites and found St. Regis chardonnay is actually palatable (not wine, but it satisfies my pre-dinner pour a glass of wine habit).

Taking down my Christmas tree and I'm a bit mortified how many wine-related ornaments I've been given over the years....

More motivation to stick with DJ!

DP - alcohol absolutely messes with sleep, and those issues can take a while to reset once you’re sober. Don’t return to drinking because you need better sleep.

Checking in on day 3. I wanted to stop and pick up a bottle of wine after work today. Going back to work is a drag, but I didn't stop and pick up a bottle. Logged into Annie Grace for support. I have a headache, but the barometer is falling, so maybe it's a weather system moving in. Took ibuprofen with fizzy water. Slept great last night and my face wasn't puffy today.
