In search of "old J Crew"

LL bean is old lady junk now

Like the an earlier poster, I've had good luck with the gap modern t-shirt in tall (I also have a long torso). Also like Muji for tshirts and basic wool sweaters, but the only stores are in NYC so need to buy online. Muji is a little boxier lately than I'd like though.

Talbot's actually has nice cotton tees.

J Crew seems to be creeping back.

Modern Citizen
I used to like Boden but it’s too Little House on the Prairie now. Also, the quality has changed.

Madewell and Billy Reid (on sale)- I can’t tolerate polyester on my skin (it’s a spectrum thing) and both brands use a lot of silk, wools and cottons.

Are you joking? What do you think the old j crew consisted of?

Not only is LL bean poor quality but it has zero style for anyone under 50

+ LL Bean is for nerdy naturalists. I have a lot of respect for nerdy naturalists, so don’t come after me, but I don’t want to DRESS like one .

I'm a nerdy naturalist and you can't get me close to a LL Bean. I wear Athleta and Patagonia. OP, add Sézane and Mango to the list.

Saw marine layer mentioned above - that was another I like the look of, but wasn’t sure. Thanks!

I have two pairs of Faherty corduroy pants and love them. Haven't bought any of their tops or dresses. My husband has some pants and shirts from there. The quality seems to be good.

J. McLaughlin (don’t remember this to spell it), but their sizing is all over the place. I’m a size 4 in J. Crew dresses and some of the XSmall dresses at JM swim on me and others are just fine. It doesn’t makes sense. If you’re a 0/2, I’m guessing none of the dresses will work.

Fun fact: there's a Boden outlet in Scranton, PA!

You may want to check out Veronica Beard. They have good workwear separates. Also, check out @olympiamarie on Instagram, she's the new womens designer at jcrew and much of the new pieces are based off 90s jcrew and she styles and explains it in her Instagram stories. Gives a better look at the clothes versus the internet model pictures.
