In search of "old J Crew"

I'm trying to update my wardrobe and having a hard time finding stores that carry decent quality items. J Crew and Nordstrom used to be my go to stores, but the quality and designs are so atrocious. Where do people shop nowadays?

I prefer to try things on, be able to return if I don't like it, etc.

Boden, but there are no stores, so you have to be okay with returning stuff.

J. McLaughlin (don’t remember this to spell it), but their sizing is all over the place. I’m a size 4 in J. Crew dresses and some of the XSmall dresses at JM swim on me and others are just fine. It doesn’t makes sense. If you’re a 0/2, I’m guessing none of the dresses will work.

I forgot about Boden (only bought it for kids and only from Nordstrom). J. McLaughlin is a new name to me, will check it out. I'm a tall size 8, so maybe there's hope for me there thanks

Not sure what types of basics you are looking for but ll bean, Prana, Athleta, and lands end all have tall. Boden does in dresses. JMc dresses are my go to for business casual

J. McLaughlin is aggressively preppy but/and a lot of their clothes are made of polyester. I just don't want to spend $250 on a polyester dress (this one is on sale, but this is the idea):

Boden is workable but their stuff never fits quite as well as I wish it did (I am also a very tall size 8). Maybe this is just me, but I usually fit well into clothes and Boden's stuff is a little erratic. I like the patterns though.

Tuckernuck also gives old J Crew vibes, but they are expensive and sizing can be erratic.

It’s really a shame that so many brands have sacrificed consistency when it comes to quality and sizing.
