Custom drapes shrunk - what to do?

Anonymous
OP, when you say they "shrank" does that mean you have a "before" picture with the curtains hung and touching the ground, and an "after" picture with them hung and now 3" taller? Or do you mean that you ordered 81" curtains and they arrived as 78" and now are 3" off the ground? Also, have you checked to ensure that the curtain rods are hung at the correct height and haven't been moved?

I do have a before, but that isn’t necessary. The designer fully believes the drapes shrunk. She has already been to my house once to move the drapery rods lower. Now the drapes are again off of the floor.

Op what is the update, is the designer going to replace them?

The fabric company said they can’t guarantee their fabric won’t shrink or expand. The designer said she’s willing to do whatever I want, but didn’t specify what my options are. She did offer up letting out the hem a bit.

At this point I just want different drapes. I have drapes in other rooms of my house and they look the same as they did when installed.

Out of curiosity (so I know what to avoid), who is the manufacturer and what is the fabric name?

Linen fabric can stretch when you are steaming the drapes. It is hard to believe that drapes shrunk 3 inches without washing them in hot water. OP, what kind of fabric are the drapes? Cotton, linen, or a poly blend?

If you can be generous and you like the designer, you might just cover the cost of new drapes (she should discount of course as much as she can). But it’s her responsibility to make it right one way or another, I think. It sounds like this was just an honest WTF and a fabric she’ll never recommend again.

Do you open/close the drapes on a daily basis, or are these just used to "frame" an area? If it is the latter, my controversial opinion is that they should be a couple of inches off the floor.

Nooooooo. And I am a person who prefers them a 1/2 inch off rather than touching, mostly because I can just move them with my hand to mop and then let them fall back. But not several inches.

I have the exact same issue! I spent over 17K on my master drapes and they were on the floor when installed back in September. As of November, they are 2 inches off the floor.

Need help!

Have you called the person who sold them to you?

21:27 —- What kind of fabric? Are the drapes lined?
Measure the drapes. Take 3 measurements, 1 on each side and 1 in the middle.

I have sewn many panel drapes in my life and have never seen this kid of shrinkage. As others have mentioned, linen fabric can stretch when steamed. This is baffling.
