Both great colleges but completely different.
Duke is suburban with a large campus and is D1 athletics JHU has a very nice campus but its very small and the surrounding area is UChicago-tier, think planet of the apes, also its D3 which completely changes the campus social vibe Duke has smart students but are more "preppy" and feels like a lot of northeast kids transplanted into the south and the D1 sports are a big thing JHU has equally smart students but are more academic and the D3 athletics is more of a social scene thing than the big time sports that you will find at Duke JHU was a school that most academically focused students and their families will like but will invariably go to can they rationalize the safety risks, out of the T20 schools, UChicago and JHU are distinguished by their third world surrounding areas, Columbia is fast approaching this too and likely will not change until another Giuliani or Bloomberg is mayor (the current mayor seems like a nice guy but just as bad as the last mayor despite) |
| Hopkins |
Hopkins has d1 men’s and women’s lacrosse. Hopkins is in semi suburban North Baltimore. |
Alumni network prob stronger at Duke in these areas. |
New Haven is a pretty tough scene too. |
Sad results from our political system |

Both very different vibes.
Duke is Southern preppy, Greek Life heavy and obviously has a great college basketball following. Hopkins is more nerdy and has a muted social scene. Has a reputation of being a stress factory for pre-med. Not sure if that holds for other majors. I agree with whoever said that someone who is not wealthy and white may not get access to all the great social life at Duke since it's Greek heavy. I'm sure there are ethnic fraternities/sororities but someone who grew up in the DC metro with all races intermingling will find a social scene where students segregate based on race to be very uncomfortable. Both are about the same in Economics/CS/Public Policy. Hopkins has a top graduate international studies school but it's unclear if undergraduate students get any benefit from that since it's based in DC. |
| Duke is a much better college experience. |
Duke parent who can attest to the veracity of the observations made by this poster. The "Greek heavy" life can make the Duke scene a little uncomfortable for DC kids. Neither campus is ideal, but Duke certainly offers more the Big UniV campus feeling. Highly qualified and generally world renowned scholars in both Universities in pretty much every single department. |
| Hopkins. |

Yes. Columbia recovered for a bit starting in the mid 1990s, but things are slowly trending downwards again (as far as campus safety is concerned). The horrific murder of the Barnard student a couple of years back took place not even a block from the edge of campus (and about a 100 feet from the President's house). What more is there to say? Sad that so many top Universities are located in such settings. |

Hopkins.
Serious schools don’t have space for elite D1 basketball or D1 football. By nature and generally speaking those teams are too professional to pass rigorous classes. It’s a red flag regarding rigorous standards or lack there of. |
| Please read the JHU crime alerts. My kid would go to Duke! |
No. You clearly don’t understand second order effects |
