Hopkins vs Duke

Is that a joke? Especially considering the demographics of the student body. It’s not called the University of New Jersey at Durham for nothing.

Congratulations OP. Two wonderful options. Campus visits are a must in this case.

Duke is Harvard of South if Harvard is Tulane of NE.

Yes this is a very good dilemma to have. There really is not a wring choice here. The important thing is, ince daughter makes rhe choice, support it, talk it up, and don't let her second guess it. That can be the thief of joy.

If you are doing STEM, if you are doing public policy, it’s still very intellectual but not STEMy at all, unless you add a STEMy minor or are on pre-med track.

Stand corrected. Yes, good point.

Hopkins if you are a minority or middle class

Duke is definitely more "white". Make of it what you will.

Hopkins is more diverse because their admission system favors academic strength.

Omg. Hopkins was already a household name around the globe.

My guess is that any given student could end up with a similar education from both schools.

I’d tilt more toward Johns Hopkins if a student were wonkier, more interested in international relations or more likely to skip law school.

I’d tilt more toward Duke if I had a more outgoing, more charismatic kid who was more likely to end up being a corporate executive, a law firm rainmaker or a Federal Reserve staffer than a diplomat or a researcher.

LOL no not Duke.

Maybe UVa over Duke for an outgoing kid, but Duke over Hopkins.

Hopkins would not have the edge in pre-med.

There are lots of impressions here, but some of those are wrong. Hopkins has more students. Duke has thousands fewer undergrads than grad students. Duke has a substantial medical school and health system in fact. Engineering and STEMy stuff too. To favor one over the other is picking the fly 🪰 poop 💩 out of the pepper. I wouldn’t want to venture far off the JHU campus. Visit both and decide.

JHU has an open curriculum which makes it really easy to double major. Our tour guide was actually triple majoring. Worth looking into if your DC has several interests.
