Duke if you are White and/or umc or chase that milieu
Hopkins if you are a minority or middle class |
| DUKE |
| It also depends a but on what she wants to do outside of the classroom. This may sound silly but my first post college job, I got through connections I made in my work study job and not my actual major. |
|
Got my master's in public policy at Duke. Great connections in DC if that is what you are looking for after graduation. Awesome program.
I love Duke, but JHU is amazing too! |
But it was copied off of Princeton |
|
Those I know that went to Duke loved their time there. Those I know that went to Hopkins (admittedly fewer) got a great education but did not enjoy college as much.
Duke's public policy program is top rated (#1 on Niche, #5 on USNWR). Hopkins did not appear on either site, although I admit I did not scroll all the way through all programs and rankings are only worth so much. Great choices. |
LOL no not Duke. |
+1 My husband was a Hopkins Econ & German major. Fantastic experience. |

Hopkins is a great school but more so for public policy as they have collaboration with their grad school in DC. It’s highly regarded and new campus is taking over Newseum on Pennsylvania Ave puts you where you needs to be for public policy internships. |

There is a BA/MA program your kid may want to explore.

Yes, Hopkins SAIS is an excellent school for international relations/international economics/public policy. The 5 year Hopkins BA/MA is a very strong program, which combines JHU resources in Baltimore with the SAIS resources in DC is great, especially if your DC uses the BA to acquire some hard skills (math, coding, stats etc).
Duke is an excellent school as well (and reasonably strong for public policy although less well known for its "international" studies) with may other dimensions and a different campus culture (sports, fraternity stuff) etc. So, academically, I would say there are pretty equal. It is more about what any students makes of the opportunities. Many PPs have it right I think: campus culture will be the main difference. And location. Does Dc want to be in JHU closer to home or want to get away from the nest? |
| JHU has more of a STEM feel to it than Duke (because of the dominance of the medical school and the public health school at Hopkins). To be clear: I think Duke is extremely strong for STEM. JHU feels more STEMy for reason indicated above. |
| Terrific options both. Students will get a very good education in both places. Overall reputation is about the same (with some variation in different fields). Your choice may come down to factors other than the academic reputation/career options. |
Duke is definitely more "white". Make of it what you will. |
Agree on both counts. Duke is safer. Public policy program is good, but not in the league of SAIS at JHU. |
