More colleges are doing this, but it's not to hide anything. It's just practical to have people waiting to take the place of those they know will leave after the first semester for whatever reason, and they're pretty good at predicting how many students that will be each year. They lose loads of money otherwise.

Yes but you notice that the top students are never deferred to this option. My DC is in the same boat OP. No illusions that it’s not to hide his stats but so what? !

Correction they are called Febs. Too early to be posting on DCUM.

Northeastern is hardly T20

DC’s friends had these sort of offers at USC, NYU, Hamilton and Tulane.

No, they are called Febs. I was one 25 years ago. The school started it because so many kids go away Spring of junior year and they saw it as a way to fill beds. They do a great job of having a great (and fun) orientation in February and graduation 4 years later, also in February, on the ski slopes. I loved coming in as a Feb. Since there were only about 100 of us, we were a tight knit group, which was nice to have entering college.

This was my DD as well. Regarding stats, she was in the middle 50th %; with the school's low admission rate and other factors, the school was a reach (even tho she was middle of the pack). She jumped at the chance to go starting in January. She did great and had a great experience. Great employment too.

Accepting changes everything that was planned for the summer. Heck, it'll completely change the plans we have for graduation.

I was ecstatic when he read the first word "Congratulations," and then devastated when I learned it was only if he started summer semester.

I know it sounds terrible, but I don't want him to be gone THREE days after he graduates HS. However, I know that I can't hold him back from his dream school. He's literally talked about attending this school since he was in MS. It just seems so rushed...

If his dream school is Penn State, I know someone who was admitted for the summer session. He called and said he couldn't make it. They said ok, see you in the fall.
Sounds ridiculous, but maybe there's some play in the offer.

Yeah, what's up with the summer sessions? I know someone who is doing this at Penn State.

So what? They're excellent schools with low admit rates that are incredibly popular. Get your head out of your butt - most kids would be thrilled to attend their reach schools under this arrangement, as PPs are noting.

Why must “T20” irrelevantly interject on every thread and then feed irrelevant “T20” pissing contests?
