Top Choice, but Spring Start Freshman

Ahh, you're still pretending to be so confused how someone might choose to be a spring admit at their top choice school? And spring admit school encourages students to be productive the fall semester, including allowing transfer credits from other colleges.

That is probably unusual. Why go all the way to a 4-year school like VT when you only intend to go to it for one semester?

My DS is actually considering this option. Was admitted to a school that was a "maybe," and thinking about trying that school out with the option of changing schools in the spring. But if he loves it, then staying. Has anyone done this path?

A good friend of DDs did this a few years ago. The friend was sure she'd transfer to top choice school in January. Parents were hoping she'd like VT and just decide to stay there. Friend did go to top choice school in January. Four years later went to Penn for Dental School. She was high stats.

One of the T20 offered my DC a deferred admission after gap year. DC denied it and went to another T20.

DS was admitted to his dream school... but for summer 2022 semester. The summer semester literally starts 3 days after his HS graduation.

Accepting changes everything that was planned for the summer. Heck, it'll completely change the plans we have for graduation.

I was ecstatic when he read the first word "Congratulations," and then devastated when I learned it was only if he started summer semester.

I know it sounds terrible, but I don't want him to be gone THREE days after he graduates HS. However, I know that I can't hold him back from his dream school. He's literally talked about attending this school since he was in MS. It just seems so rushed...

If his dream school is Penn State, I know someone who was admitted for the summer session. He called and said he couldn't make it. They said ok, see you in the fall.
Sounds ridiculous, but maybe there's some play in the offer.

I have one kid who couldn’t do this. Socially, she isn’t bold enough to find her way into an established group. My other kid could do this, but probably would decide against it.

Things I would consider…is this common at the school. Are there efforts and programming to integrate the spring start students? Do they have the same sort of welcome and orientation as the fall start students or do they just move in and get going?
