Is Putin really crazy, like #45 crazy, or is it mental deterioration?

Putin is not crazy. He is a very articulate, intelligent man with a strategic mind. That given, he is evil.
Ukraine has been in the Russian interest for a while now and a large part of Ukraine speaks Russian and is ethnically Russian. This makes Ukraine an obvious choice for a buffer state against NATO. But because Ukraine has gotten very close to joining NATO which would make it idiotic to invade in the future, and would have the West surrounding Russia, Putin decided that now was the right time to invade to prevent this from happening.

He's not mental, he has a goal of building an empire in mind.

I suppose Trump could be right once in a while.

You already posted this in another thread and there’s nothing “interesting” about this. Trump spent four years putting Putin first, praising him, giving him military bases, spurning the counsel of US intelligence. Just because you never read a legitimate newspaper for four years doesn’t mean the rest of us didn’t know what he was up to (at least the public stuff; that guy is going to be screwing us over for decades to come).

Trump gave Putin everything? Like the 200 Russian soldiers who died at the hands of the best military ever in Syria? Meanwhile the "newspapers" PP is referring to spent 4 years on the lie of RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA, a perfect phone call and INSURRECTION!

And he was wrong about Russia "owning" Germany, since they pulled the plug on the new pipeline once Putin invaded Ukraine.

I don't think there is any evidence Putin is crazy. It's easy to say this or that person is crazy. They usually aren't.

If you look back at his illustrious career from bombing residential buildings across Russia, the Chechen war, all the meddling in Europe, wars in Georgia & Ukraine, and lending a hand in other conflicts, he's neither crazy nor senile. He's continuing with his modus operandi but is being more arrogant about it from all the wealth he amassed and his "success". He feels he can whatever. Is that madness? May be. But the modus operandi is the same it's been the past 30 years.

+1. I don't think he is crazy at all. His maneuvers make complete sense if you look at things from his perspective. Google "The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia".

Agreed. Also, it does not matter if he is crazy or not in whatever definition we’d like to use. He’ll continue to do what he does until someone stops him. Is labeling him crazy some sort of plea for empathy? Sorry, he gets none from me. Whether he’s a mean dog or a rabid dog, put the man down. Now.

It does matter whether he is "crazy". If he is truly nuts, that raises the prospect of WW3 and a nuke exchange. It limits how we can use conventional force against him, because his trigger-point for launching nukes could be quite low. But if his thought process for invading Ukraine was rational, then the risk of WW3 is low (but not zero), and we can be more aggressive in our use of conventional warfare against him. And yes, while it may be difficult for an American to understand, there are indeed rational lines of thought that could have lead him to invade Ukraine (just as one could perhaps make a rational argument for our invasion of Iraq). There are also irrational thought processes that could have led Putin to invade Ukraine. My sense is that he is rational and clear-headed, and he is motivated by an extremely deep distrust of the West. We are also motivated by a deeply engrained distrust of Russia. I do not believe that either his distrust of us, or our distrust of him, is "irrational". Each side has valid reasons to distrust the other.

He is becoming increasingly unhinged. And, as his troops meet more resistance, that is only likely to grow.

He is an evil, cruel sociopath who really should not be walking the face of this earth. It would be nice if somebody could just take him out.

Germany still gets like 40% of its oil from Russia. Time to cut ties and look elsewhere.

Our state dept was urging them to rely Russia during the Obama years.
Trump was just inelegantly stating the obvious.

OMG. I'd never heard of this. So chilling and explains so much, including what has been happening to us. How is this not better known?

Thanks for reminding us about Trump's talent for repeating the lines fed to him by Russian propagandists. And how hard he worked to divide NATO.

The US needs to stop getting oil from Russia too.

8% of our imports come from Russia – an average of 22 million barrels per month – and that share has been steadily rising.
