Teacher here...trying to protect my unvaccinated 18-month-old and my unborn baby... I wouldn't say I'm trying to instill fear in students, but more the idea of selflessness and "sacrificing" to protect others. I say "sacrificing" because it really isn't a huge deal to the students, it seems to be much more of an issue with parents.

I don’t understand this logic. Unborn children can never be vaccinated (except for the antibodies they receive from mom). So are we all supposed to mask forever?

We have to protect the unborn by any means necessary even if it means the mother has to die in childbirth, unless I have to wear a mask then eff that fetus.

Interesting that you’re equating people who are anti-choice with people who are pro (mask) choice

Interesting that the person further up doesn’t think a teacher protecting her unborn child via masking is fit to be in the workplace. It’s almost as if you peoplle don’t want humans teaching your kids, but nameless faceless drones who only do as you say.

The best response to this woman is that she could be exposed to dozens of illnesses while pregnant. Hopefully her unborn child will be protected by her own vaccinations for covid, measles, etc. Pregnant women have taught as long as their have been pregnant women. So her issue isn’t new or unique. And if her concern for her child’s safety is so severe, she should request a non-classroom position for the duration of her pregnancy. She cannot insist that masks be worn by others forever because she is pregnant. Measles is still around and so is covid and they will be with us forever. I totally understand her fear but on balance, she is not the person whose interest school boards should be focusing on. Public school exists to benefit the children and society as a whole. Not the individual teachers. They are a cog in the wheel. They aren’t the wheel and they aren’t the mission.

I’d have slightly more respect if you people just outright said “labor needs to lick the boot” and stopped dancing around it. We get it- you’re rich and powerful, how dare the plebes talk back, etc.

Perhaps schools do a survey. One thing I know is true is that the majority of people - students, teachers, parents- regardless of political affiliation are ready to allow masks to be optional. It’s time.

How can you say there should be a survey in one sentence and in the next, claim to already know the result of the survey?

I believe that most parents are ready. But it is not a popular opinion in this area because the issue has become so political. So people are quiet about it even if they say they are done with masks behind closed doors. A survey would enable the school to anonymously collect opinions about a range of topics including whether to go optional, what metrics people support for returning to masks, etc.

I'd say you're probably right, as once our school went mask-optional, almost everyone stopped wearing masks.

Well, in my kid's class most families actually support mask mandate -- info gathered from playdate. You are welcome to state your preference loudly in PA meetings, but nobody wants to be represented by you.

Um, I think you need to go back to the political forum. This is the private school thread. Our schools have to consider the views and desires of parents because we foot the bill. We don’t get to decide things but our views are directly connected to the school. We have opted out of the public school leviathans run by unthinking people like you. So take your high outrage, low value class warfare bologna back to the political page where you belong.

No they don’t and shouldn’t. No amount of deleting comments calling out your political agenda is changing the situation. We see through you, and at least in our (top) school tour views are frowned upon and inconsequential.

And yes, I’m convinced there are political motivations: Students for Fair Admissions, Undercover Mother, etc.

Classism is a key component of private schools, regardless whether you think it’s “bologna” or otherwise. People like you see all labor as The Help, people who should sit down, shut up and do as you say, and private school teachers see this DAILY.

I’m sorry it makes you uncomfortable to reckon with these things. Perhaps you should move to Florida where your dream of silencing anything remotely disagreeable to you in the education world is quickly becoming a reality.

I don’t have a political agenda. I have kids in a Virginia private and was curious what schools are telling parents. You probably don’t have kids at all but even if you do, your opinion or politics is of no interest to me. I am asking for input from parents about what schools are saying and doing. That is it.

No you are not. There’s no way all these OPs are innocently asking the same question 2-3x per week over and over again.

Just asking questions" is a cowards way of making a point. This is for example a known Tucker Carlson method.

Let me ask a question. How many of you anti-maskers don’t support the Students for Fair Admissions court case? Thought so

Plummeting Covid-19 case counts across the United States are leading to lifted mask mandates and more conversations about steps toward normalcy — but more people are dying of the coronavirus now than during most points of the pandemic.
More than 2,000 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the United States each day for the past month. Average daily deaths are falling, but from a very high point. They dipped just below that mark in recent days, to about 1,900 on Monday; the federal holiday may have delayed reporting.
Before Omicron became the dominant coronavirus strain in the US, there were only about 100 other days when there were more than 2,000 Covid-19 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The only other time that deaths have been this high for this long was during the first winter surge, before vaccines were available. The Omicron wave has also been deadlier for longer than the Delta surge: In September, when Delta was dominant, average daily deaths topped 2,000 for half as long.
More than 120,000 people in the US have died of Covid-19 since Omicron became the dominant variant in December, and Covid-19 has accounted for more than 1 in 5 deaths reported in 2022.

My upper school DD went to 2 parties over the long weekend. Kinds did not wear masks and were in close proximity in doors. More than 10 kids from those parties are now positive for COVID.

So? How many of them even knew they had it before they were force-tested at school?

Sticking your head in the sand is an outstanding way to go through life. A valuable lesson for your kids- just ignore everything that you don’t want to deal with!

Every Va school should be mask optional starting March 1. I know our school used to send out emails saying “Per Gov ..etc etc and this is why we have to mask.” Now it is a law so not sure what is the hold up other than the politics at play including board members who are involved politically with former candidates. That sort of thing.

It’s not politics and - for the millionth time, PRIVATE schools don’t have to do anything the Governor says.
