Is it really that simple. Shawn White made generational wealth as a snowboarder. And she is much better looking, a model in fact, which factors in for marketing especially for women. |
No. There is just not that much money floating around for that. Most people have never heard of her and will think she is Chinese. China is not a big snowboard country…so no money on angle. You over estimate the money. |
This. All you people who are so shocked that Gu gave up American endorsement money are naive. Also, it’s unclear exactly what deal she cut with China, she may have even retained her US citizenship. Athletes should do everything they can to cash in while they can. Their earnings window is painfully short and god knows none of you faux outragers are going to step up and pay her rent ten years from now. Nope, you’ll be calling her washed up, if you remember her at all. |
You think that there won't be a lot of chinese endorsements for an attractive athlete who may be one of the most successful winter Olympians in the country's history? PK. It doesn't matter that china isn't a big snowboard country. |
Wouldn’t this apply in the USA as well? Shawn White is worth $60M, and she is much better looking and more marketable. I just don’t think it’s as simple as $$. But let’s not blame her, this was clearly the moms decision. |
It's theoretically possible, but Shawn White was the face of snowboarding just when it was taking off, for multiple Olympics. That role has been filled in the US, and that's what Gu is trying to be in China. |
I live in SE Asia right now and the Chinese media is all over talking about how Gu escaped from the horrible USA to return to her beloved homeland. Anyone who points out she trains in Tahoe is reviled as an imperialist American. It is entertaining. I can’t wait to see what they say when she goes back to Stanford. Of course they think her mom was really clever to come to US for school, have American baby with unknown US citizen father and take lots of money from Americans while still planning on returning to China. |
You must live a similarly stress free life as you have time to devote to commenting on something this unimportant. |
| Wonder how her deadbeat father feels about it all. |
| Nobody else thinks Gu may be competing for China to protect family there? |
She is already a successful model. She is all super smart (SAT 1580) and is attending Stanford. She will never have trouble paying her rent. |
Hi OP. Shouldn’t you be scheduling your next Botox appointment, or something similarly important? |
Instead of this misplaced outrage a better response is to turn it on China and frame it as its inability to compete without borrowing athletes from the US…. This is the ‘f&^k you!’ the communist party will understand more than anything else. |
| John Branch at NYT seems obsessed with Eileen Gu. He’s published like four articles about her in the last week. It makes me sick. |
| They are people, not property. We don’t own them. |
