Tragic. Why did she marry his brother? THIS is not victim shaming, blaming or otherwise. It's a question to be pondered from a psychological perspective.
I didn't read any links. Maybe it was addressed. |
She shouldn’t marry the man she loved because of his brother? What are you asking? In the last few years when rape and sexual assault were talked about so frequently, did you read anything about how victims respond or no? |
She was a teenager in some sort of uber strict Evangelical school in UP Michigan. The Chatfield family ran the school. Needless to say, she was basically groomed as a child. She then went on to marry into the family, as often happens with teenage women in very conservative religious cultures. I'm not sure she even knew she had other options. Her parents probably heavily pressured her into the marriage. |
This grooming is par for the course for these radical Christians. It is what they envision for all of the US. See their stand on "pro-life" and women as incubators. |
I am from MI and follow politics there. This is one of the times where the parents didn't pressure. The mother and step father relocated to move away from the church, but the daughter, who was in HS at the time, did not want to go. Which kid in HS wants to move - coupled with being groomed - so sad. |
The victim told Bridge in the interview that Lee (her teacher) and his father (the preacher/dean of the school) manipulated her and told her to disobey her parents and move in with the Lee family. |
It was discovered she and her boyfriend (Lee's little brother) were having premarital sex at age 19, thus they pressured by the Chatfield church to marry each other. |
In the Bridge interview I believe she says she and the little brother didn't really want to get married that young and they were both frazzled the day of the pressured wedding. She says Lee isolated her to talk about the wedding and then forced her into a closet and it sounds like he made her give him oral sex. Then he left the room and said to paraphrase, "You're marrying my little brother," as in, it's happening, period. |
And not to go OT with their "pro-life" obsession but Lee Chatfield's wife has publicly owned up to having an abortion as a teen, after a drunken whatever led to pregnancy. Hmm, interesting how that moral certitude plays out in real life. |
The mother (who had been a member of the Chatfield church) trusted the Chatfields and the daughter did not want to be with the alcoholic father. |
I was not defending this *sshole at all. Just countering the PPs suggestion that real estate is super cheap in Petoskey. |
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5390-Rustic-Rd-Petoskey-MI-49770/106341288_zpid/ On 10 acres. This would be a $2+ million property here, if you could even find it. |
