SAT 1510 GPA (although this rigorous HS does not calculate gpa) 3.7 |
My daughter is pre-med (neuroscience) at WashU and has had a good experience. Finds it to be collaborative with lots of academic support - she just finished Organic Chem, and got through it well with a lot of help from classmates, TAs, professor support, etc. She also likes the flexibility to double major and/or explore courses in other areas. She came out of a FCPS public school and has found the academics challenging but not overwhelming. And, she likes St. Louis as a place to go to school. She's not a big partier, but has a great circle of friends and seems to have a good amount of fun. So far, it seems like the right fit for her.
Also, in terms of name recognition, anyone in medicine knows WashU. There are lots of great undergrad research opportunities. Clinical shadowing opps have been limited by covid which is stressing her out, but she's hoping that changes in the coming year. Good luck to all whose kids are going through the admissions process! |
This is correct. DC just graduated from Emory business school last month with a STEM major from the arts & sciences school. The ease of cross registration across university divisions is a big plus for Emory, although it might be harder to get into undergraduate business school classes if you aren't a business school student. |
Emory is in a more international city. Has a spike in Healtcare/Public health.
Wash U has gamed the rankings. |
Emory is in a more international city. Has a spike in Healthcare/Public health.
Wash U has gamed the rankings. |
With an endowment WashUs size it was always going to be ranked highly. But yes people don't talk about Emorys spikes enough, or they purposely ignore them. Emory is top 5 in nursing, public health, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs. Emory and WashU should switch in the rankings but WashU is slightly more selective and has more money. |
My DC is at WashU in the business school and chose it over Emory. It was a tough call but chose WashU b/c some programs in other areas of interest were stronger such as computer science, math, analytics. In comparing the math programs for example the courses and focus areas at Emory were more limited. DC also didn't like the two years doing general courses at emory. At WashU there are some distribution requirements but DC was able to do more exploration than possible at emory. |
The middle of both ranges you posted is in the 99th percentile! |
Again, no it's not. The medians of both ranges you posted are in the 99th percentile. |
88% of Emory's profs are full-time, while only 67% of Wash U's are, in case that matters to you. Easier to find them outside the classroom, more commitment to the school, probably better faculty morale. |
Wash U was built with new money and has done a great job as THE Ivy League reject school for the NY/NJ area that choose schools based on USNWR.
There is a nice walkable area called the Loop by the campus. About a 5 min walk. Nice, but kind of a dump. Very overrated. Think more in the Wake Forest / Tufts area. Crazy yield protective. CRAZY. |
Emory is a poor mans JHU. Incredible programs in healthcare and the dominant hospital system in the SE. Huge pre-med and pre-professional programs.
The only things missing is 200 years of high status graduates. Just been about the last 30-40 years. Before that, it was more of a regional school. Most people that have attended both says it feels a lot like Penn. Social, Ivy like school in the South. But unlike Penn, it's in a gorgeous part of the Atlanta in a wooded neighborhood. And the Highlands and Buckhead are fun and high end. Vanderbilt ran a play book and Emory is in the process of following. Will be top 15 soon. Has all the ingredients. Applications are sky rocketing and rate is falling - 13% last year overall. Great program that requires two years of liberal arts no matter if you go into Business, Nursing or Public Health. |
The South is Rising - Look at the exploding application numbers and prestige.
Harvard/Yale/Princeton = Duke/Rice Columbia = Vanderbilt Brown/Penn/Cornell/Dartmouth =Emory Look at avg ACT/SAT rates and application rates and you'll see the gap has closed. People are interested in better life styles and weather. |
Had a great meal in the loop at an Italian restaurant owned by Eritreans in exile. Nearly 30 years ago. Great memories. |
