Didn't read all the other posts, but one thing that helped us was to have a gated play area where the 1 year old could be. Yes, he cried sometimes when he was in there, but it allowed our 3 year old to do things without being bothered by his little brother.

I also put one of those travel picnic attachment seats on the dining room table. One year old was them immobile but still felt that they were part of the art/cract/lego play that I did with her older sibling.

We have an 18 month gap followed by a nearly 3 year gap. Baby/toddler time with DC3 was much easier than same time period with DC2. The larger gap helped, as did the fact that DC1 and DC2 had playmates for when I had to focus on the baby. Plus, I think I was just less exhausted because I actually had a year in between where I was neither pregnant nor breastfeeding.
