If they made it longer, most of us would need to arrange childcare since most jobs don't have limits on the amount of time off their employees can have. Sure, teachers and gov employees may have limitless days off but those of us who work in the private sector have far fewer.

Right, but a lot of schools offer winter break camp through their after school programs. And for people who have to work but are willing to shell out more money, there are other specialized winter break camps (gymnastics, art, etc).

So your saying I should be willing to shell out for camps so some rich dude can go to London for holiday over Xmas break?

It is not all rich dudes. I work with lower income immigrant families who often take their kids to visit family in their home countries. Their kids end up missing 1-2 weeks of school because our winter break is so short. These kids desperately need school but would be way better off with a 2 week winter vacation. Some of these families were telling me that back in their native countries, winter break was a month long. They don’t understand the MCPS system

I know those migrant families are always jet setting all over the globe and taking those long holidays.

Your ignorance is showing. Just WOW. Are you implying migrant families are all poor? What is your point? MANY families around here come from different countries and fly back to visit families during the holidays. Why does this surprise you? How stupid are you? Get some culture. Read a book.

How I wish my American children could have the same calendar here!

I call troll. No one who is truly French would choose to raise their kids in America.

LOL!!!

Would very much enjoy the schedule you describe. Also, Would love more 3-4 day weekends just to break things up a bit. HOWEVER, I recognize how difficult that would be for many parents who have trouble getting child care whenever there is a break or random Friday off. =(. So, I suppose I wish we could have more paid days off for those who need it AND such a school schedule.

They were being sarcastic genius. The posters point about migrant families would benefit from more unpaid leave and a lack of child care is nuts.

Lol, "genius"-you're the one who missed the point. Reading comprehension isn't your friend.

Please show the data and evidence that a majority of children in the county will benefit from a longer winter break. Aside de learning regression which is yes, a thing, particularly for kids from lower SES schools, there’s a question of childcare for working families. Sure, there may be some small percentage who wish to ski or go to their home country, but these are not the majority of kids / families. Catering to the 1% isn’t the responsibility of public schools.

LOL exactly! These posters are so privileged they can't even comprehend the concerns of ordinary people and really couldn't care less

I find this thread funny as there are many places in the US that do have break schedules similar to what’s being discussed. They also go back to school late July/early August. Every-time that option is raised here the good ole DCUM balk about not going back until after Labor Day.

Two weeks is enough time for kids and teachers to really feel they get a break.

It's a nice idea but few employers would be down with this.

+1 until the work culture in the US supports a school schedule like this, it won't happen.

Other states have this schedule. And I don’t understand why people are acting like it’s so much more onerous to sort out childcare for the 3 days before the current break when people already have to find childcare for the 5 days between Christmas and New Years if they can’t take off work. Also, don’t people already have to figure out child care in the summer? We’re talking 3 extra days! There are also low cost options.

No .unless you want to spend 2 screaming girls fighting and yelling.i say Christmas to Jan 4th is enough

Ca serait impossible ici. La plupart des gens n’ont que deux semaines de vacances.

It would do a lot for teacher retention without actually raising salaries, too.

Most teachers I know work in the summer to earn money so no, making summers shorter would not be a big hit with everyone.
