OP, check your privilege. Not everyone in MoCo has the money and time to travel to London over Winter Break. For us poors who have to work, it’s nice to have the kids back in school after 10 days.

Check your mediocrity, why must policy be based on the least among us. Proper holiday trips are cherished holiday traditions for many of us. Of course it doesn’t really matter if kids miss a few days while traveling and apparently it will break your finances

God some of you are just awful. When you have a thought like this, why not just keep it to yourself?

New poster. Because it's true, pp. We don't need to lower ourselves to the least common need. We need to raise to the highest. Its your underlying belief that no one should have xxx because some can't have xxx that has lead to the decline of America's exceptional ism. We are all tired of it.

It’s not the least common need, it’s the MOST common need. The 5% or the 1% is in the minority. The people for whom the extra week of allows for the extra long vacay or time off from work. That not how most of this area experienced the break. Check your privilege - and your math skills while you’re at it.

Check your assumptions and your overuse of the "check your privilege " drivel.
Kids in k through 5th need child care. Kids in 6th through 12th do not. The majority do not need childcare. As far as affording childcare, instead of fighting the good fight to sustain capitalistic goals above the needs of children, maybe you should try supporting tighter extended family bonds and more family leave.
How do you think the Europeans do it? Smh.

+1.
And for kids who don’t have any enrichment at home, there’s a slide in learning. Maybe not a factor at schools in wealthier areas but certainly at our local Title 1 school.

Check your facts. The learning slide happens during summer, not a two week wi term break. Lengthen the winter and shorten the summer.

Check your facts. There is a learning slide over the winter break for many kids - this is a pervasive issue and while not as significant, an issue nonetheless. Educate yourself.
SMH.

If kids are forgetting their learning in 2 weeks what happens after they graduate? What a ridiculous argument.

How I wish my American children could have the same calendar here!

I would love that schedule, but we’re hemmed in by state requirements for instructional hours and days, contractual obligations, stunted academic growth due to more than a year of virtual instruction, equity issues, childcare issues, trying to accommodate multiple different religions’ biggest holidays, complete lack of agreement from parents on what type of schedule is most beneficial. We will continue to live with a schedule that makes everyone mad, but for different reasons.

DP, but are you serious with the bolded? The Europeans, who are light years ahead of us in providing PAID family and annual leave, more humane working hours, etc.? Now I’m shaking my head. Christ.

If they made it longer, most of us would need to arrange childcare since most jobs don't have limits on the amount of time off their employees can have. Sure, teachers and gov employees may have limitless days off but those of us who work in the private sector have far fewer.

Right, but a lot of schools offer winter break camp through their after school programs. And for people who have to work but are willing to shell out more money, there are other specialized winter break camps (gymnastics, art, etc).

So your saying I should be willing to shell out for camps so some rich dude can go to London for holiday over Xmas break?

It is not all rich dudes. I work with lower income immigrant families who often take their kids to visit family in their home countries. Their kids end up missing 1-2 weeks of school because our winter break is so short. These kids desperately need school but would be way better off with a 2 week winter vacation. Some of these families were telling me that back in their native countries, winter break was a month long. They don’t understand the MCPS system

Oh, sweetie, having money and traveling doesn’t make you “the best of us.,” as the ignorant tone of your post makes abundantly clear.

I’m sorry you’re so insecure. I hope you feel better soon.

That’s the schedule we had overseas and it was great. So much better for students and teachers.

Yes!! We just moved to Portugal and love the school schedule here, especially all of the holidays in December on top of holiday break.

I know those migrant families are always jet setting all over the globe and taking those long holidays.

Thank you!!

God help the people who have to run this district. Parents will never be happy, and online outlets are giving them a bigger bullhorn than ever to complain.
