When atheists raise the name Jesus instead of cursing

The sh** word, the f*** word, the c*** word, and any creative combination of these. You have lots of options available.

Isn’t the je*** word generally less offensive than those words?

Who is offended by those words these days? Except maybe the C word, and in places like Britain it’s in common use now.

Most people?

I think those words are still generally considered offensive to most people. And I think je*** is only considered offensive to a small group of people. And less offensive overall.

So you’d rather target your offensiveness to one defined group? Seriously, nobody cares about the s or f words. But for people for whom the j word is an article of belief, yes it’s offensive to many although not all. You don’t get a pass for thinking the j word is somehow “less offensive.”

It’s not targeted to anyone at all. How TF do you know who is Christian or not? Sorry, people aren’t really keeping track.

I don’t really put that much thought into specific expletives, but “Jes*s!” is a lesser expletive. The strings of stronger expletives are usually saved for extreme situations.

Anyway, it’s not about you.

It’s definitely not about you and your freedom to offend at will, either. Grow up.

LOL. You think people are going around and intentionally trying to offend you? Lolololol.

No one GAF about what offends YOU.

Grow up and take some responsibility for yourself. That means getting a hobby besides trolling people of faith with your inane lols. You can do better.

Well isn't that special.

And if all those are ok, I don’t see why anyone should care about the c* word. It never made any sense to me why it is the nuclear ☢️ word. It’s a word. - a woman

I go by the George Carlin rule: There are no bad words. Bad thoughts, bad intentions, but no bad words.

Stop trolling and read a book or something.

Who's trolling?--I'm serious. Words aren't good or bad. There are so many more important things to be concerned about than which word someone says.

So you think the n* word isn’t bad,
and that it’s ok to call your house cleaners sp***s,
and your coworker won’t mind if you say “hey, c*nt, please review this”
and it’s ok to insult believers of all stripes by taking important names/words in vain.

You look like a ridiculous child. Grow up.

DP here. The fact that you conflate saying "GD" to those other pejoratives indicates you are certainly clueless and almost certainly a racist and a sexist. I know you probably don't think so, but you are, and you should think about that and possibly change it.

Trolly troll troll. Also, the thread header is about Jesus’ name, not GD, so get a grip on the trolling.

PP here. Not trolling, it is 100% true. Do you need it explained to you?

You’re the racist and sexist for invoking George Carlin to claim those nasty epithets don’t matter. Stop trying to put it on another poster, and stop pretending G*dda**n and Jesus have the same weight. You look like an ignorant, racist MAGAt tbh.

So you don't understand about being culturally Christian. Heck, even my Muslim friend got in that habit when we both lived in a very Catholic country
It's all about the society you move in and what comes out of their mouths. It's not deliberate at all on the part of each individual.

“Culturally Christian” doesn’t mean what you’re pretending it does. It means having a tree but not going to church, which you already know. It does not mean insulting Christians. You really are a bigot.

No, you can't follow a thread and don't know what "DP" and "PP" mean apparently. I am the one accusing the PP of being racist and sexist for equating the an interjection with a pejorative, and apparently you DO need it explained.

- Saying "Jesus Christ" as an interjection does not imply any other human being is deficient or insult them in any way.

as opposed to:

- Using the N-word insults an entire race of people and has a long history of being used in centuries of oppression.
- Using the word "sp***s" to describe Hispanic people is the same. BTW, your using "housecleaner" as your example doubles down on your racism. Mot of the housecleaners I know are from Eastern Europe and not hispanic, and I grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood and none of my friends are housecleaners (but would be ok if they were).
- Saying "Hey c*nt" to a co-worker - and BTW you are a sick SOB even for thinking that is a possible example - insults a specific person, is gender-specific and therefore sexist and is not an interjection of any kind.

So you see how your logic FAILS and you are comparing apples and abject racism and sexism? Probably not. But that's because of your lack of self-awareness. Work on that and you'll be a better person, and possibly even a better Christian.

You are a racist and a sexist, as demonstrated and proved.

NP. OP, what you don't seem to understand is that you don't set the rules for Christians. There are millions of Christians in the US and almost that many ways of being Christian. There are many Christians who take Jesus's name in vain (and God's, too-- and its interesting that you seem to think Jesus is more important than God; not all Christians would agree with you), and doing so is in no way an indication of atheism.

Further, for millions of Americans, there is hierarchy of curse words, and "Jesus" and "damn" are definitely considered more benign and less offensive in general company than "shit" or "f*ck". You personally might feel differently, but again, you don't set the cultural standards.

Reality is that involuntary interjections are exactly that - involuntary - and are likely to be heavily influenced by what you heard growing up. In our house we ran the scale from jeez to Jesus to Jesus H. Christ. If you caught yourself when grandma was around it was jumping jehosephat. None of these things have any bearing to any individual member of my family’s religious convictions. Although over the years my stubbing toe interjection has mostly morphed to motherf*****. It is what it is.
