How long do your sofas last?

How long do your sofas last (the ones that you sit on every day)? When do you know it's time to replace?

Our last sofa set lasted ten years almost exactly. We bought them when our kids were really young and so they were used and abused a lot. We bought a small carpet and upholstery cleaner and I would give them a deep clean about twice a year.

We deliberately waited until our oldest went off to college before replacing our set. Our youngest is 16 and prefers lounging in his room, or on the Ikea set in the sitting room, so it's mostly my husband and I who are constantly using the new set. I expect it to last at least ten years, but will keep it longer as long as it doesn't look too outdated. Surprisingly, our last set held up well as far as design, and we had to really go out of our way to find a sofa that didn't look like it--a very bland and blah tan microfiber set.

Also, it has electric recliners and realistically, I'm not sure how long that will work for. Our last sofas had manual recliners. If the electrical components go out in the sofa, we will probably get rid of it.

Good ones about every 10 to 15 years.

My Ethan Allen sofa is 17 years and going strong. It was used in our family room daily for about 8 years and then went to the basement where it gets used by kids every day. Even the fabric still looks good.

DH and I each brought a sofa when we moved in together. We each bought them circa 2006. They are doing okay, one better than the other. I would like new ones, but we just had a baby, so there's no way. If they can hold up a few more years, I'll be happy.

We bought a lightly used one in 2006 and it's still okay. Ideally we'll get a new one in 2-3 years when I'm more confident kids won't jump on it.

People, they are sofas. Don't be cheap. Buy them and replace them. You don't need to wait till the kids go to college.

God, you are cheap!

Ours have a lifespan of roughly 3 years.

We've tried high end and low end. Same life span. That's what it's been with my rambunctious boys and my man child dh.

Pre-marriage even my cheap, free off the curb furniture could last forever. My parents had the same sofa for over 20 years!

I know it's time to replace when I start hating it & can afford to replace
Last couch was 10 years. It's still fine structurally and is now in a different room.

Ours is 9 years old and really needs to be replaced.

We bought a cheap leather one from BJs in 1999. Still in our basement. We bought our expensive living room set 5 years ago, and it needs replaced.

My first sofa purchase was still very functional after 15 years but had faded badly and suffered unspeakable indignities at the hands of a big spitter upper. months 4-7 took 10 years off the life of that couch.

Better cheap than an ass.

8 years. It looked pretty junky after 5 years (Macy's sofa not super expensive) but we kept it because we had young children. We just moved and got new furniture.
