NP: I am very liberal and think people should do whatever they wish. However, that does not mean that what they do isn't idiotic. In this case, the guy was an idiot for going to North Korea, and an idiot of an even greater magnitude for tearing down a political poster.

It continues to amaze me that people believe NK and the fuzzy video that he stole the poster. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but to not question that allegation and the video is also being an idiot of some magnitude. Why in the world would you believe NK???

Because they are brainwashed idiots. And they want to believe the worst of a young, misguided college student who comes from a "privileged" background. They hate what they perceive as privilege and entitlement

I don't have to believe the worst of him to think he played with fire and got badly burned, nor do I think he was merely "misguided." And I do think his privilege and entitlement led him to believe that he could travel to North Korea without any consequences. My own sons are from a privileged background and if they chose to do something as stupid as travel to North Korea, I'd obviously be devastated if something terrible happened to them, but the consequences would be on them not on the president.

And, the fact that we shouldn't necessarily believe NK about the poster incident is EXACTLY why it's dangerous and idiotic to travel there.

Yes! To me, the incident with stealing the poster is completely irrelevant. NK can use whatever they feel like against Americans, which is why Americans should never travel there. I am sure NK used him to make an example to the NK for whatever twisted propaganda they have going on.

The North Koreans lied and they killed, and now they deserve to die for their misconduct and failure to change their own regime. Stupid freaking animals.

Cartoon responses targeted at a level for 5-year olds are not helpful. This is why we need a real state department, not part-time rookies like Jared Kushner and Rex Tillerson.

What a horrible story, the poor boy and his family....

We need for Defense and State to let our allies know that NK's time is up, and then to nuke those slimy pieces of shit into oblivion. Or would you prefer to respond to the killing of an American with a strongly worded resolution, you weasel?

Personally, I don't want a nuclear war over one person's poor decisions. Its not worth it.

Sure, let's nuke them today on your say-so.

I guess maybe I don't understand enough about comas to know what his medical condition was. Was he on life support in NK that the parents discontinued? Or was it coincidental that he died so soon after coming home? Heartbreaking.

Massive hypoxic brain injury often doesn't end well long-term even if the person survives the initial trauma. Even with good care. For example, Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau was resuscitated after being buried in an avalanche while skiing in 2012--he evolved to a "minimally conscious state" but then died 18 months later of complications. Human bodies aren't meant to lie around indefinitely, immobilized and on feeding tubes. And when the complications inevitably set in, the family may decide at some point that it's kinder to let the person go.

North Korea murdered this kid. I don't think a military response is appropriate because we realistically cannot put millions of South Koreans and Japanese citizens at risk over one person, but they need to be made to pay somehow. Totally unacceptable way to treat a prisoner under international law.

I feel angry and like I want the military to retaliate... but I think a week from now I might regret that. This is surely a tool they are using to scare their own people as well. 'The Americans are strong and we can still kill their people''. Imagine what a scary country that would be to live in. And I say this being the DIL of a NK citizen whose family managed to escape. Fil won't even talk about it- brought up that he escaped once and have not heard about it since. Dh had no idea. I think he is scared they will find him or something.

More than anything my heart is truly aching for ottos family. I have a strong urge to write a sympathy card. I know maybe that's creepy and/or crazy. Does anyone have an idea as to where things like that could be sent?

Why did NK bother releasing him and even keeping him on life support?

He made a poor decision but one that he shouldn't have had to pay for with his life. May he Rest In Peace and may his family find comfort that at least he was able to die at home.

They don't his death to occur on NK soil. Lowers their negotiating leverage.

And now he's died. So sad!

How incredibly sad for his family. I hope they can find some measure of peace.

Why do people want us to attack NK over this? Yes it's awful. We can't embroil ourselves in conflict and risk lives because a 21 year old went to North Korea and stole a poster.
