What an awful story this is, from start to finish. I guess maybe I don't understand enough about comas to know what his medical condition was. Was he on life support in NK that the parents discontinued? Or was it coincidental that he died so soon after coming home? Heartbreaking.
Massive hypoxic brain injury often doesn't end well long-term even if the person survives the initial trauma. Even with good care. For example, Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau was resuscitated after being buried in an avalanche while skiing in 2012--he evolved to a "minimally conscious state" but then died 18 months later of complications. Human bodies aren't meant to lie around indefinitely, immobilized and on feeding tubes. And when the complications inevitably set in, the family may decide at some point that it's kinder to let the person go. North Korea murdered this kid. I don't think a military response is appropriate because we realistically cannot put millions of South Koreans and Japanese citizens at risk over one person, but they need to be made to pay somehow. Totally unacceptable way to treat a prisoner under international law.
