Oh dear. Chantilly HS is south of Route 50. Guess we need to rezone everyone north of Route 50 to other schoosl. Since it is an insurmountable barrier.

The elementary school kids all change friends in middle school anyway. I’m not sure I see a need to keep all of the elementary at the same high school?

Scenario 3 also eliminates Navy as a split feeder by moving all current Navy Oakton HS families over to Chantilly HS.

That requires bumping Lee's Corner out--it is not going to happen unless they move out a whole bunch of Brookfield and Poplar Tree.

But why would moving Navy Chantilly HS families to Oakton HS bump Lees Corner out of Chantilly? I don’t get the connection?

OOPs! I Must have misread. I thought you were moving all of Navy IN to Chantilly. But, those Navy kids live across the road from Chantilly. They should not move them out.

Yeah. Scenario 1 moves all Navy kids out to Oakton. Scenario 3 moves all Navy kids in to Chantilly. Scenario 2 leaves the Navy kids’ high schools alone which is why I’m in favor of that one.

Scenario 3 moves all the newly zoned Navy kids to Chantilly,[b] but it also rezones a portion of them to Waples Mill > Oakton. However, if they aren’t touching ES boundaries now, then there will still be a portion of Navy kids who go to Oakton.

I thought that was actually in Scenario 1?

Since they aren’t touching the elementary school boundaries my guess is they would revise the maps then so those kids would stay with the Navy cohort. I am eager to see the new maps at the end of the month.

The scenarios are all crazy because there are too many moving pieces. There are separate issues that really do not affect Chantilly (it is pretty much a given that Oak Hill will leave), Centreville, and Westfield.

Whether Fox Mill or Crossfield goes to Skyview (and one of them should be a given) has nothing to do with how to backfill Westfield. Neither of those schools really has anything to do with Chantilly, Centreville, or Westfield.

So, they have put the shift between Fox Mill and Crossfield into maps while they are shifting around schools south of 50 to determine who goes to Westfield.

These should be two separate things. The only thing that confused the issue was when they put Lee's Corner into the mix--when it should not have been there.

There should be maps for Skyview (north of 50) and separate maps for filling Westfield (south of 50) for high school.

After that, they can figure out middle schools.

I completely disagree with this. Crossfield not going to Skyview and demanding Franklin MS (to stay at Oakton) forces out many Chantilly families from Franklin MS. That disrupts the Navy cohort at the middle school level. And now to compensate they are splitting up Navy to Franklin and Rocky Run. Which hurts the Navy Oakton families who get sent to Rocky Run.

Crossfield not going to Skyview forces more Westfield families to have to fill Skyview, as a result leaving a greater hole at Westfield that has to be backfilled. They tried to use Lees Corner, a school in walking distance of Chantilly, to backfill Westfield.

They really need to set the boundary for Skyview, leave everyone else alone and see how Skyview relieves overviewing at the other high schools first before making huge changes.

Westfield isn’t a viable school if they pull the better part of three feeders out without moving some other kids there. At a minimum the Chantilly part of Cub Run needs to move there. Then both Chantilly and Westfield have four 100% feeders and part of a fifth.

No. I think Crossfield should go to Skyview, but it has nothing at all to do with Westfield kids at Skyview. Sorry, but the Westfield kids are going to Skyview. Again, Skyview is in Floris boundary. Discovery Square kids could walk to Skyview. If you take them, then McNair and Coates would be an island.
The question is whether or not it is Crossfield or Fox Mill who also goes to Skyview, along with Oak Hill from Chantilly.
Since Oakton has reached capacity and has new construction coming soon, it makes sense for Crossfield to go. But, again, that has no effect on Westfield.

My suggestion would be to send the Chantilly/Cub Run and wait and see how it works out. With new construction, that should be sufficient. Maybe, include Walney Oaks.

Suggest you take a drive from Loudoun County to Greenbriar. Tell me how many residential areas you see south of 50 until you pass Centreville Rd.

So, proximity in miles is much more important than your fake street boundary,. Got it. Let's figure out which areas attending other schools now are closest in miles to Westfield and call it a day. Any ideas what neighborhoods those might be?

No. I think Crossfield should go to Skyview, but it has nothing at all to do with Westfield kids at Skyview. Sorry, but the Westfield kids are going to Skyview. Again, Skyview is in Floris boundary. It seems like Crossfield getting some special promise from FCPS to move to Franklin messed up all the middle school boundaries in the area. Is that why that neighborhood near Rocky Run is being sent all the way over to Liberty? That's nonsense.

Maybe. Because now part of Navy has to come to Rocky Run because they have been displaced from Franklin because of Crossfield coming to Franklin MS. Which in turn may displace current Rocky Run families. It’s all ripple effects.

There's a certain number of students and percentage of middle/umc students an FCPS HS needs to function to offer enough advanced courses, have a supporting booster club, support the band, etc. I don't know what those numbers are. I hope FCPS does but they are so incompetent, who knows?

There's a tipping point where high achieving families start to transfer out of a school.

Crossfield is nowhere near Franklin MS - why are they getting moved in there in all 3 scenarios??

Right now, Westfield is a functioning school that most zoned MC/UMC families are willing to attend.

FCPS has to be careful not to make decisions that take a school that is acceptable academically and move it into dysfunctional territory.

Because RIO lobbied for it to try to ensure their kids stayed franklin to oakton. And they have a parent embedded at Gatehouse.
