Our taxes help fund the weather stations and other apparatuses that collect weather data; meteorologists, in turn, use that data to make their predictions (and farmers, among others, use it to guide their farming activities). If the federal government no longer chooses to fund the data collection, we will likely have to pay a monthly fee (like Netflix) just to get the wether on an app. How do you not know this?

My parent are FO. Two of their children (my sisters) are Feds, as is one of their husbands. One was laid off, the other has to move as a result of RTO (she was hired remote).

My sisters have cut them off and I don’t know if the relationship is reparable. They still claim (vocally) they don’t regret their vote. But they are pretty upset about not seeing the kids/grandkids. There seems to be an incredible disconnect between what they voted for and how that is upending my sisters lives.

But I have told them. I told them simply expressing regret for their vote given the now obvious outcome, and showing empathy would be enough. My dad was a federal employee for 38 years and they live predominantly of his CSRS pension, so it’s all very hypocritical.

You expect your local channel 11 meteorologist to launch his own weather satellites, tending balloons, and ocean current monitoring buoyes? Because data from all of that is what is fed into models that other meteorologists use to predict the weather.
Best analogy I heard is that saying you don’t need NOAA because you have a weather app is like saying you don’t need farmers because you have a grocery store.
