Snow day

I highly doubt it, mainly because if even a couple of inches are predicted for later today they won’t have the plow trucks off the main roads until after that falls and is cleared.

I would love to agree with you but no way. Not with 8+ inches of snow.

Best case scenario is a two hour delay on Wednesday.

But parts of Reston are only getting 6" of snow! So they should definitely go to school tomorrow!

That’s not happening fool. Believing this means you’re either new to the area or deluding yourself. 6 inches is a no go.

A friend swung by to pick up our son, the friend is the only one with a 4 X 4 and grew up in Michigan and was just skiing in Colorado, we trust him driving in this stuff. His comment was that the street in front of our ES had been plowed but was a sheet of ice. Their house is within walking distance of the sledding hill, which is why he offered to bring my son over. Both boys are onlys and best friends, what better way to spend a snow day then sledding and hanging with a friend.

I would expect the roads to be icy tomorrow which is dangerous to drive on without the right type of car. I am guessing that school will be closed tomorrow and at least have a delayed start on Wednesday. I am not going to be surprised if schools are closed Wednesday because it is hard to get into the back roads in this area.

Teachers, please know that many of us appreciate the work that you do and your efforts. DS has had a great experience at RCMS. The Team lead sends out weekly emails, grades have been entered in a timely fashion, and DS likes all of his Teachers.

Here is Capital Weather Gang’s post from 6:30am

If you're just waking up, 3-6" of snow has already fallen across much of the DC area. We're well on our way to 6-12"

Some totals are shown here.

Instant gratification has fried our brains. People see a forecast of 6-12 inches over a 24 hour period and think if they don’t see all 12+ when they wake up at 6 am then we didn’t get anything.

The original forecast had the biggest batch of snow coming overnight. The snow hole seemed to delay the start of the storm and then most of us woke up to no precipitation at all when the heaviest snow was supposed to fall before 10am. It's picked back up again but I would be surprised if we hit double digits unless the heavy snow window extends later than originally. We'll likely hit the 6 inch mark and be within our prohection but the storm also clearly went further south than originally projected based on snow totals in Stafford. It's disappointing when all the models showed the DMV getting the biggest accumulations.

All that said, this is the most snow my kids have ever seen in person so they're already up and out having a great time in what we do have.

Current forecast is for heavy snow to continue until noon, then let up, and then an additional heavy band in the evening giving an additional 1-2" of snow.

The snow storm isn't done yet.

No, but locally we are not getting more than another 2” or so than we have now. Meaning where I am we are looking at 7” max.

I have 8 on my back patio now. And all these side roads will be sheets of ice in the morning.

Sorry to all y’all who see school as childcare. Maybe you shouldn’t have had kids?

They can't send parts of the County, it is all or nothing. The only real exception is one school having electrical issues or something along those lines. And 6 inches is hard to clear in this area. I grew up in Massachusetts and lived in Michigan for 10 years as an adult. I get it, if you come from a place that is used to snow this makes little sense. But those locales are better resourced to handle snow because it is a regular part of winter. We are not. Also, their school districts are smaller so it is easier to send kids to school because there are fewer schools to contend with. If the entire area s clear then send the kids even if the neighboring County can't. I hated those days as a kid, we went to school and the town next to us didn't. So jealous...

No way. We will definitely be off tomorrow. Custodians will get called in tomorrow to clear schools so maybe Wednesday if they push for it. But there will be so many neighborhoods that won’t be cleared effectively.

Teachers need to go in even if kids are off tomorrow. They have had two weeks already

Nobody has 8 inches yet. We’ll see if it materializes. They were wrong on the overnight amounts.

I hate comments like this. They are so rude and dismissive. Many families have 2 working parents because that is what is needed to live in this area or for a variety of reasons. Snow days when you are trying to get to work or working from home are a pain. It isn't that we don't want the kids home, it's that it makes other parts of life harder. And it should be ok to complain about that without people saying "You shouldn't have had kids." And there is nothing wrong with thinking that kids should be in school when they are scheduled to be in school. That is where they go to develop the skills needed to be functional adults. It isn't child care, it is an important part of their growth and development.

We are lucky that both of us can work from home today so we are not taking a hit on our pay checks or PTO allowance. We would have been fine if our son stayed home with us. Luckily he has a good friend who lives by the sledding hill who invited him over and his Dad has a 4 wheel drive truck who came to get my kid. It will be more fun for him, sledding with his friends and hanging out, then it would be at home with both of us working. A lot of families don't have the choices that my family has and it is hard.

Snow already tapering off, not much more expected later, you’ll be lucky to get a 2 hour delay tomorrow.

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we see a plow in our neighborhood before Tuesday.

Calling it now: FCPS CLOSED FOR THE WEEK.

Mark my words. Come back to this!

I hope you are wrong! (Though you are likely correct.) There is the possibility of snow next weekend. This could be a disaster.

They’re not going to close for the week. Simmer
down.

Wouldn’t be the worst thing. If there’s snow for kids, could be some core memories. Everyone remembers when the schools closed for a week in the 90s from snow.
h

Only time we we closed for a week was bizzard of 1996.

That was back when Americans were tough, not the weak, woke America of today. Going to get more snow next Friday and Saturday. Schools will reopen with a 2 hour delay on January 15th.

Snow is woke now. Got it.

I hope you get the help you need.

No help needed. Where I grew up the snow projected for Sunday/Monday would be considered a dusting. Would be going to school on time.

Like it or not America has gone soft and woke culture is partially responsible for that softness.

Oh do shut up....I have been in this county since 2000....this is not soft it's VA weather and not being able to handle it the way they do in Buffalo. Sorry you have to deal with your kids
