Lunch and recess hours apart

Anonymous
My child started kindergarten (MCPS) and I got her class schedule and they have Lunch from 11:45-12:15, but they don't have recess until 2:25. I went to MCPS schools 20 something years ago and I remember having lunch and recess back to back. I thought this schedule was kind of weird. Are there any other schools like this?

How does that make me a helicopter? I'm curious if other schools are doing this.

When my kid, now teen was in K they had what I had, which was a.m. Recess, lunch recess, and p.m. Recess, but I think those days are over in public school. That makes me sad.

However, if they are going to have just 1 recess, I would rather it was separate from lunch so they get 2 breaks.

I think it probably breaks up the day better. Also, you can have fewer classes out for recess at the same time if different classes are out a diff. times. Less crazy that way.

Jeez, chill out OP

My school does this too. Last year was the first year it was put into place. Seems to work-out well.

Wow, only one recess??

Is there a reason your child has to have recess immediately after lunch? I taught in a school in Eastern Europe where recess was in the late morning followed by lunch at noon. Where I taught in Latin America, kids walked home for lunch and siesta and never had recess at all. Most lived within a three block radius of the school so they didn't even have a vigorous walk.

+1 This spreads out the time they are required to sit still & pay attention.

As an aside, my niece just started K at a public school in CA & my brother happened to show me her class's daily schedule while I was visiting. I was happy to see it includes am recess, lunch recess, & pm recess every day so there are still some public schools out there who give kinders 3 recesses. Unfortunately, those schools seem to be few & far between these days & not located in the DC area

The only year my DS got more than one recess was kindergarten.

Because that's how it was when OP was a child ~30 years ago.

Most normal people wouldn't give this any thought. You started a post on this. Why is your snowflake so special?
Bottom line: the school decided this was the schedule. Deal with it.

You're taking the whole post out of context. It was a simple question. Relax, it's Friday!

+1. When we were in K the big discussion was whether we could switch from recess after lunch to recess before lunch, but I would be surprised too if recess and lunch were entirely different times of the day. Sometimes it helps to find out other people's experience with that schedule-- it doesn't mean anything more than that.
