Pregnant vegetarian craving meat

Anonymous
Any pregnant vegetarians experience strange cravings? My sister has been a vegetarian since middle school and is pregnant with her first kid and says she's been craving meat. Is this a thing?

I don't know if it's a thing but her body is probably craving the iron found in red meat.

My best friend was veg for a long time and had strong meat cravings. Actually started eating meat, figured her body was telling her something.

It's a thing. I went vegetarian so my pregnant friend could eat meat for a while and more animals wouldn't die because of her cravings.

That's very nice of you. I will celebrate your act by eating an ossobuco.

Yeah, her body just wants protein.

I was a vegetarian from 15 to 34. The second pregnancy I had hyperemesis and oddly, cooked animal flesh or broth was one of the few things that didn't aggravate my nausea. Sadly, I now lack the willpower to quit meat again.

Not a vegetarian craving flesh, but a vegan craving cheese! Any time I think about cheese, I eat something else, so I'm not hungry. And I think about the treatment of dairy cows, specifically the forcible insemination and taking away of their babies, so humans can drink the calves' milk. Cravings solved! Please pass the guacamole!

Avocados are terrible for the environment. I'd eat some cheese.

When cravings are for something like a pint of Ben and Jerry's, I think, skip. When it's for a food that is nutrient dense, like meat, eat it. I am usually a take it or leave it meat eater, but if I don't get regular, fairly large servings of animal-based protein during pregnancy, I feel just disgusting. Her body probably needs the concentrated fat, iron and protein.

I was a vegetarian before my first pregnancy and the same thing happened to me. I ate meat and continue to do so. Each pregnancy (I'm on number 3) I especially crave hamburgers , which I don't normally like.

You're one of the reasons many of us don't want to always mention being vegetarian or vegan. Good grief. You can't just say eating meat like a normal person?

I just ate a hamburger stuffed with cheese and it was great ! Cheese INSIDE the meat.
