Tell me the best way to cook corn on the cob

Anonymous
It's been years since I've cooked corn on the cob and my son has been asking for it all summer. Finally bought some from Harris Teeter and I'm planning to cook it for dinner. We are having grilled chicken and a garden salad with it, if that matters.

So what's the best way to cook it? Grill it? Boil it? Microwave it? Cook it in the oven? Help me, I'm not a great cook. Lol

Are you making the chicken on a grill?

I like grilled corn on the cob, but I probably wouldn't fire up the grill just for it. Microwaved or boiled is fine.

Boil it with a little salt in the water. If you grill it, boil it first. You could do it early so it is out of the way, then put it on the grill to heat it and get a little char on it if that's how people like it. If you try to grill it raw, it won't really cook through very well before the outside starts burning.

It's also okay to break the ears in half or even cut them into 2" lengths or so if you don't have a big enough pot. Better portions for the kids that way too.

I can tell you what not to do ... I tried a method I saw on the internet where you wash the shucked corn and then wrap it in saran wrap, place it in the microwave and nuke for a couple minutes (cannot remember how long). Anyway, either my microwave is too strong or my ears of corn were too small because the corn was really hard and dehydrated when I was done. I was trying to avoid boiling water and ended up wasting two good ears of corn. Sigh.

I love it grilled - people debate leaving the husk on or off when grilling corn (you always remove the silk), but I remove it, brush with evoo or melted butter, s/p and grill, turning often, for about 15 min.

You can also boil it - once water is boiling, drop in husked corn, turn off the heat, and leave for 5 min.

Another method is to oven bake/steam it - place a husked ear of corn in a square of tin foil, add a pat of butter, s/p, crimp the foil up tightly. Place the tin foil wrapped corn cobs on a pan and bake at 350 deg for 45 min. This takes the longest, but you can literally pop it in oven and forget about it, and there is virtually no clean up.

Grilled is best.

Shuck the corn, wash the corn, and wrap in aluminum foil with a slice of butter.

Oh, and if you aren't grilling, you can put it in the oven instead.

Boiled is okay, but washes out the flavor. Microwaves wreck it.

Bring a pot of salted water to boiling. Pour in milk and a stick of butter. Put corn in and boil for 8 minutes. Perfection

I prefer it boiled with salt and butter, boil for about 15 minutes.

My H prefers to wrap in foil and put it on the grill. Inside the foil we put butter and old Bay.

My MIL prefers to put the corn directly on the grill. It will have grill marks (aka burn marks) if that bothers your young child.

I find the MIL way chewy. The other 2 ways are more moist.

I really lake it all those ways.

A really easy way is to put is in the oven, husks and all, for 30 minutes at 350. Just put a pan underneath (on a different rack) to catch any of the pieces that fall off and could burn. It makes removing the husks so easy. Just hold with a towel and peel back. You could then season the way you like. I think grilling taste really good as well, but this is a super simple way to go.

Cooks illustrated did corn on the cob this month. They say boil water, add corn and cover. Leave in the pan off the heat for ten min.

Wow, thanks everyone! Now I'm not sure if I should grill it, bake it or boil it. So I guess no matter what, the husks come off first? I may try the advice of boil for a short time and then wrap it in foil and grill it... My husband is grilling chicken.

We grill our corn with the husks on. Takes about 20 minutes, rotate a couple of times while grilling. It kind of steams them with the husks on.

If you're going to boil, don't add salt. That will make the kernels hard. Take the husks and silk off, then put in boiling water for 10 minutes.

If you are making this because your son requested it, I think you should boil it or wrap it in foil and bake it. I adore grilled corn, but it is a different taste/texture than "traditional" corn on the cob and may not be what your son is pining for.
