Frozen Shoulder

Anonymous
Has anyone here been diagnosed with frozen shoulder? How painful was it for you, especially trying to sleep, and how long did it take for it to correct itself? I am in so much pain I want to throw myself into traffic. I don't think I can take any more otc meds as now my stomach is a mess. I've had steroid shots and can begin PT in several weeks. Any advice or info on what I can expect?

VERY painful. Why are you waiting so long for PT? That's the only thing that cured it for me.

The dr wants to see me again before I start PT. These were his orders.

That's odd... How bad is it? When I had it, my arms were stuck at 10:10. Couldn't get any closer.

I cannot lift my arm laterally or behind. Did you have it in both shoulders? I only have it in one. Cannot brush my hair, wash my hair, put on a sweater, pretty much everything causes pain. Lifting is out of the question. Mostly the pain is terrible at night, I cannot sleep.

Now my stomach is beginning to hate when I take advil or alieve.

I had one about 10 years ago. It was incredibly painful. I was diagnosed by an orthopedist who recommended physical therapy. I did PT for about 5 months and they kicked me out of the program because my insurance was up, but thankfully about the same time as therapy was ending my shoulder began to unfreeze. I have to say that the pt was the most painful thing I've ever been through. They basically just move your shoulder a little bit more each time you go to break the adhesions that form in the shoulder socket. I actually have full movement of my shoulder now and sometimes forget which shoulder it even happened to, which I guess was a successful treatment.

Get to the PT as soon as you can OP - that's the only thing that will help unfreeze it. It's a slow process but you will get there. If you have to wait for PT, there are exercises that you can do on your own at home. Just do a google and you can at least get a head start on therapy.

Swimming is excellent for this. Your form will be pathetic to start out.

LOL, no. Not sure how you can swim with a frozen shoulder. You arm is literally frozen in place and there is no range of motion. You'd be swimming with one arm.

Bands will help, but not yet. They will have to work with you to get it moving. I was threatened with frozen shoulder when I stopped using my arm because of the pain from a torn rotator cuff. It got be moving, for sure!

I'm sorry you've found yourself in this position. The best you can do is really apply yourself when exercising. I'd start today with isometrics. There are loads of online resources. Good luck with this. Be patient with yourself but do all you can. It takes time but your condition will not change without extensive effort.

I;m surprised they haven't prescribed muscle relaxers to get your going.

Crawl, backstroke, and butterfly very difficult, if not initially impossible. Breast stroke should be possible, albeit with initial difficulty. Also stroking under water in breast stroke type fashion.

Get to PT ASAP!
This is not something to fix on your own.
If doctor wants to see you first, get your appointment moved up to this week.

Best of luck! So painful and usually does not go away on its own.

My mom had this and I helped with /watched a very long PT stint as a teen.

To this day, I carry a very lightweight purse b/c her diagnosis was pointed at not only the weight of her purse but also the way she carried it (always same position on her arm).

Best of luck OP but really I'd echo others to get to PT immediately.
